“Yeah,” she lied.

“A little surprising.”

“The renter had a family emergency.”

“Ah.”

“Were you working this morning?” she asked.

He shoved his hands in his pockets. “No. I went to see my dad.”

She raised her eyebrows, genuinely surprised. “How’d it go?”

“Not bad. Actually, better than I expected.”

“I’m glad.”

He nodded.

After an awkward silence, she spoke again. “So, which one of us should move out?” Saying it made her chest ache.

“Eden.”

“I guess it doesn’t matter. I will.”

“Eden.”

“It won’t take me long to pack.” She turned away, intending on retreating to her bedroom.

“Eden, wait.”

She slowly turned back around.

“Can we talk? Please.”

She tried not to look into his dazzling hazel eyes, tried not to recall the feel of his messy hair between her fingers or his hard body gliding over hers. Then he came closer, his woodsy scent filling her nostrils and making her weak. “I need to sit down.”

She moved into the living room and sat on the recliner, thinking it safer than the couch. A flash of disappointment crossed his face before he sat on the couch across from her.

Delaying the inevitable, she opted for a safe topic. “What did you and your dad talk about?”

“You, mostly.”

Her eyes widened. “Me?”

He nodded. “I told him all about you.”

She shifted uncomfortably.

His lips twitched. “Don’t worry. It was all good.”

She relaxed some.

“I also told him that I screwed up. That I walked away from you when that was the last thing I wanted to do.”

“Why did you?”

“Fear.”
