“She no longer works for our company,” Angela stated.

“She was fired?” To him, it seemed like a harsh punishment.

“Yes. This wasn’t the first time she made a major error,” Angela explained.

This seemed to mollify Eden some, unless she was too tired to argue anymore. She sat down on the couch, her shoulders slumped in defeat.

Cole walked Angela to the door. “Thanks for the gift cards.” She nodded and hurried off, like she couldn’t wait to escape. He closed the door, went over to the couch, and stood before Eden. He set the envelope on the coffee table and slowly backed away.

Eden jerked her head up and scowled at him. “So that’s it? We’re just supposed to accept the stupid gift cards?”

“You should look at them. There are some really expensive restaurants where we can eat for free.”

“Free food. That’s all that matters to you?” She shook her head in disgust.

“It’s not just the food. I’ve been wanting to go four-wheeling, and now I won’t have to pay.”

“Four-wheeling?”

“Yeah. It’s kind of like a motorcycle, but with four wheels.”

“I know what it is! I just can’t believe how easily you’re accepting this.”

He sighed, his patience running thin. “Excuse me for trying to look on the bright side.”

“So you’re a glass half full person.”

“You make it sound like it’s a disease. Listen, the way I see it is we can stay here and be miserable or we can—”

“Make the best of it. You already said that,” she muttered.

“What other choice do we have?”

“One of us could leave.”

“We’ve already discussed this. I’m not leaving.”

She pushed herself to standing and tightened the tie on her robe. “I’m not leaving either.”

“It’s settled then. I’ll make myself scarce during the day and stay in the loft at night.”

“We’ll have to share the kitchen,” she said, sounding slightly less angry.

“We’ll buy and make our own food and clean up after ourselves.”

“You make everything sound so easy.”

“It can be.”

“What if I want to watch a movie?”

“There’s a TV in each bedroom.”

“The screen is bigger out here.” She pointed to the oversized flatscreen TV mounted above the fireplace.

“I don’t watch a lot of TV, but we can take turns if we have to.”

She raised one eyebrow. “You don’t watch TV?”
