“So, what do you think? Can we get back on the track we were on before?”

He didn’t need to specify before what. She slowly nodded, because what other choice did she have? “Yes.”

He let out a big breath. “Good. I feel better now, don’t you?”

She nodded again, though to borrow his description, she still felt a little off kilter.

“I have an idea. How about if we finish hiking around the lake and then go out for dinner?”

It was something that friends would do, yet it felt different. Maybe because she was watching his lips moving and thinking about kissing them. “Okay,” she said.

Cole gazed at her across the table, trying not to stare at her lips. They were good lips, full and pillowy soft. The kind one could sink into, as he now knew first-hand.

“Recently, I’ve been thinking about writing my own book instead of reading everyone else’s,” she was saying.

He’d asked about her job, partly because it was a safe topic, and also because he was truly interested. “Why don’t you?”

“You make it sound so simple.”

“Do you have a story idea?”

“Ha! More like fifty.”

“What kind of book would you write?”

“I was thinking romantic suspense.”

“So a mystery with a little romance thrown in.”

“Or the other way around.”

“What’s stopping you from doing it?”

“Well, let’s see, my paying job for one.”

He chuckled. “Couldn’t you write in your free time?”

“I haven’t had much free time until now.”

He assumed she was referring to Patrick. “What about while you’re here?”

“The other day, I started drafting an outline.”

“There you go. You took the first step.”

The waiter came to the table with their pizza. Turning to Eden, he said, “Be careful, it’s really hot.”

“Thanks,” she said, smiling at him.

After he walked away, Cole leaned in. “He was flirting with you.”

Her eyebrows furrowed. “What? No, he wasn’t.”
