“I’ll have what my partner’s having.”
Marco’s eyebrows flew up and hit the ceiling, but the waiter didn’t flinch. “Sounds good.”
After the waiter walked away, Marco leaned toward Zane and growled, “What the hell? Your partner? Now he’s going to think we’re together for sure!”
“You could do worse.”
“I’m going to kill you and dump your body in the ocean for the sharks.”
Zane was only half listening. Across the room, the waiter was setting plates down at Bree and Scott’s table. Zane noticed that Scott had ordered a steak and Bree had gotten pasta with grilled chicken.
She must not be worried about getting pasta sauce on her dress. He took that as a good sign. If she were on a date, she might have ordered something less messy.
His gaze swept over her, and his jealousy reared its ugly head. She looked beautiful as usual, especially in that dress. He was glad she wasn’t showing too much skin, though he could see her exposed shoulders and their smattering of freckles. Freckles that he’d kissed…
“Aha! So that’s why we’re here,” Marco said, interrupting his musing.
Marco’s attention had also turned to Bree. She was laughing, the sweet sound drifting across the room.
“You knew she’d be here, didn’t you?”
“Maybe.”
“Why is she with Duggan?”
“He might be listing her grandparents’ house.”
“Might be?”
“She hasn’t signed anything yet.”
“I bet you’re hoping she doesn’t.”
“I don’t like her working with that—”
“Asshole,” Marco finished.
“Exactly.”
“Why’d she pick him?”
“She found him on the internet, where he touts himself as the top real estate agent on the island.”
“It’s probably true.”
“Not helping,” Zane growled. He picked up his wineglass and took a long drink. He’d rather have a beer, but he’d been trying to blend in.
“You know what I think?”
Zane shook his head.
“I think it doesn’t matter who the agent is. You just don’t want her to leave.”
His friend knew him too well, and there was no use denying it.
Their waiter came up to the table and dropped off their salads before flitting away again.
Zane enjoyed a brief reprieve as they dug into the food, but he kept an eye on Bree. At that moment, Scott was refilling her wineglass, and she held up her hand, indicating he should stop. The ass pretended not to notice and poured a bit more in the glass. Is he trying to get her drunk?
