Beth laughed. “I’ve never talked about baseball so much in my life!”
“The irony is, you don’t even like baseball—the sport, I mean.”
“More wine?” Beth asked.
“Sure.”
She topped off their glasses and sat back down on the chair, tucking her legs beneath her. “I love this right now.”
“The wine is really good.”
“No. I mean you and me, this house, this town, the weather.”
“Colton. Joey.”
“Bec!”
“Sorry, not sorry.”
Beth took a long sip of wine and glanced across the yard at Colton’s empty driveway. He and Joey hadn’t returned yet, and she wondered if they were still at the soccer field. She felt a twinge of longing, and she missed them even though Becca was there. Funny how she’d already become used to their presence in her life.
“I don’t know Colton well, but I know men. He won’t want to wait around for long to hear what you’ve decided.”
“I know that. Christopher’s email caught me off guard, and I didn’t want to say anything until I had a chance to really think about it.”
Just then, she saw a flash of headlights as Colton pulled into his driveway. Becca noticed too, and they watched as Colton and Joey got out of the car and started toward the house. It was still light out, and when Colton glanced over at the sunroom and saw them sitting there, he gave them a friendly wave. They waved back, and he hesitated for a moment as if he were considering coming over, but then he turned and went inside.
Beth took another drink, and then she looked over to see Becca staring at her.
“I think you already have your answer, don’t you?”
