“Except, we don’t usually discuss books.”

“Boobs before books?”

He laughed. “Something like that.” Then he glanced down at her tank top and swallowed hard. If she only knew what he’d been thinking about on his run, she’d probably smack him and walk away.

“Eyes up here,” she scolded, but her lips twitched like she was holding back a smile.

“Sorry, but in my defense, you were the one who mentioned boobs.”

She chuckled. “I didn’t mean mine!”

“Old habit.”

She sucked in a breath, which made her chest stick out, drawing his gaze there again.

Since he was afraid she’d leave, he reverted to the subject of books, thinking it’d be safer that way. “So, what is this book about?”

She sighed. “You don’t have to do this.”

“Do what?”

“Pretend you’re interested in my life.”

“I’m not pretending.”

“Beck…”

“C’mon, Jen. We’re sitting outside, in public, talking about books. It’s something that friends would do.”

She shook her head, her blonde hair grazing her bare shoulders. He recognized the freckles he used to trace with his tongue…

“We’re not friends,” she stated firmly.

“But we could be.”

“Why?”

“Why not?”

She crossed her tanned, toned legs, which were on full display since she was wearing shorts and her beloved Converses.

“Do you own a pair in every color?” he asked, pointing to her shoes.

“Just about.”

“Cute.”

“Stop trying to change the subject.”

“What subject?”

She threw up her hands. “You’re so infuriating!”

He laughed. “But in a good way, right?”

She started to get up, and in the process, she accidentally knocked the book off the bench. They reached for it at the same time, but he was quicker. He held it up and read the title: Twice as Tempting.

“Give me that!” she said, trying to snatch it out of his hands.
