She hesitated but decided one kiss wouldn’t hurt. She’d already scanned the parking lot while they’d been talking and felt reasonably confident they’d get away with it.

When he leaned in and placed his lips on hers, she stopped worrying and thinking altogether. She melted into him and sighed against his lips.

When he slipped his tongue inside her mouth, she fought the urge to climb over the seat and straddle him. So much for exercising self-control. They went at it for some time until the sound of a door closing caused them to pull apart.

Wendy had come out of the building again, but this time, she was dressed in what might have been church clothes and carrying a dainty white clutch. She waved and smiled at them and went on her way like it was an everyday occurrence to see two people making out in a parking lot—even on a Sunday!

“I better go,” Stacy said.

“I’m just going to sit here for a minute,” Nick replied.

“Why?”

He glanced down at his lap, where his arousal was more than evident.

“Oh. Good idea.”

After a quick goodbye, she hurried to her car and got in before she changed her mind about leaving.

The first thing she did when she got home was change into fresh clothes. Then she dotted concealer under her eyes and brushed her teeth since she’d had to use her finger at Nick’s place.

She used the next few hours to do the things she usually did on a Sunday afternoon: paid bills, did laundry, and ran the vacuum cleaner. She’d have been lying if she’d said she didn’t think about him during that time, but there was comfort in going about her normal routine.

As she was vacuuming the living room, she saw her book lying on the end table, where she’d left it two nights ago. That reminded her that she needed to set up the next book club meeting. Typically a fast reader, she would have finished the book by now, but she’d been a bit…distracted lately.

After she’d finished vacuuming, she went into the home office and turned on her laptop. She checked the myriad of emails she’d received over the weekend and deleted most of them. Then she composed an email to the book club, asking if they’d be available to meet Thursday or Friday of that week to discuss See You Then and select the next book.

No sooner had she closed her laptop than her phone rang. She got a little thrill, thinking it might be Nick, but then she saw it was Kelsey. She hesitated but decided it would be better to be grilled now than tomorrow at the office.

“Hello?”

“Did you spend the night with him?”

How could she possibly know that? “With whom?”

“Eric!”

Stacy clamped her hand over her pounding heart. Kelsey had no idea she’d canceled her date with Eric, nor about anything else that had happened since then.

“No. I canceled.” She sank down on the couch and prepared for the barrage of questions that was sure to follow.

“You canceled. Why?”

“It’s kind of a long story.”

“I’m not doing anything.”

She sighed. There was no easy way out of this, and it might help to talk it out. “A lot changed since we talked. How was your time with Hudson, by the way?”

“He wasn’t there, and stop trying to change the subject.”

She sucked in her bottom lip, wondering where to begin. “Nick showed up at my house on Friday night.”

“Whoa. I like this story already.”

Stacy laughed.

“It was raining Friday night. Did he have to strip again?”
