“How so? Everybody loves you there.”

“Not everybody.” An image of Britney came to mind.

“You’ve worked there forever. Your reputation won’t be ruined over this. What’s the real problem?”

“That is the real problem.”

“No, it isn’t. That’s just the excuse you’re using to mask the real problem.”

“It’s true what they say about hairdressers. You’re like a pseudo-psychologist.”

Jenna laughed. “You’re right. We’re like bartenders, only with a pair of scissors and a blow dryer instead of a shot glass and a bottle of whiskey.”

“Speaking of which, I need a haircut soon.”

“Way to change the subject. So, when do I get to meet your hot student?”

“You don’t.”

“What? Why not?”

“I’m afraid that if he meets you, he’ll realize that I’m too old for him.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. You’re only thirty-five.”

“I’ll be thirty-six soon.”

“So what? Have you seen recent pictures of Christie Brinkley? She’s in her sixties, and she’s still gorgeous.”

“I’m sure she has a group of professionals who keep her looking good.”

“So do you. Me.”

Stacy laughed. “Thanks, but I don’t come close to Christie Brinkley.”

“He chose you, didn’t he? If he’s as dreamy as you say, he could have his pick of women, but he chose you.”

Hearing her sister reiterate that helped, but it didn’t eliminate her fears. “He’s only here temporarily. He plans to move back to Florida.”

Jenna sighed. “Ah, Florida. What I wouldn’t give to be lying on a beach right now.”

“Not helping.”

“Maybe he’ll decide not to go back. Maybe he’ll fall head over heels in love with my beautiful sister and decide to stay.”

She and Jenna were different in many ways, but she could always count on her sister to boost her self-confidence. It used to be the other way around, but since her divorce, they’d switched roles. She hadn’t realized how badly Cole’s betrayal had affected her until she’d started dating again. Two years had passed, but she was still recovering from it.

“I don’t expect this to last. I was hoping you’d give me some advice on how to have a fling.”

Jenna burst out laughing, and then she muffled the sound, probably afraid she’d wake up her guest. “Good one, sis.”

“I’m serious. I don’t know how to do this.”

“It’s not an assignment. I can’t tell you what to do.”

“Please. There’s nobody else I can ask.”

Jenna sighed. “Just follow your instincts. You’re a smart woman. Do what feels right to you and don’t worry about the rest.”
