She heard Jenna shuffling around and then the click of a door closing.
“I have company,” she said when she came back on the line.
I’m not the only one who got lucky last night. “Oh. Sorry.”
“It’s fine.”
“Who is he?”
“His name is John. I cut his hair.”
Jenna was a hairstylist at a high-end salon in West Bloomfield. It paid to have a hairstylist in the family as Stacy got her haircuts for free. Well, sort of. She paid Jenna in other ways, like taking her out for dinner or buying her surprise gifts. It was well worth it, though, and she’d sent her a lot of referrals, so she didn’t feel too guilty.
“You never mentioned him before.”
“It’s new.”
“Ah.”
“What’s on your mind? It must be important if you called me this early.”
Stacy ran her finger around the rim of her coffee mug, wondering where to start.
“Is this about a guy?”
“How’d you know?”
“Just a hunch.”
“We work together. I’m training him.”
“The teacher-student fantasy, huh?”
“It’s not like that. He’s really sweet and funny and smart.”
“So, what’s the problem?”
“There are multiple problems. He’s my boss’s nephew for one, and he’s quite a bit younger than me.”
Breezing past the first part, Jenna said, “How much younger?”
Bracing herself, Stacy replied, “Almost eight years.”
“My sister, the cougar! Good for you!”
Stacy’s eyebrows shot up. “Seriously? That’s all you have to say?”
“Is he hot?”
She rolled her eyes, but she had to smile. “Yes. Very.”
“Still not seeing the problem here.”
“He’s my boss’s nephew,” she repeated. “If word got out that we were—”
“Having sex?”
“Seeing each other,” she corrected. “It could be disastrous for my career.”
