We hugged. “No, not really.”
“What about us getting caught in the rainstorm?” Nick said innocently.
Kelsey perched on the corner of Stacy’s desk, looking delighted at this new tidbit of information.
“We should probably get back to work,” Stacy said, averting her eyes to the training manual.
Kelsey ignored her. “So, was the rainstorm before or after Bed Bath & Beyond?”
“The next day, actually,” Nick said.
“The next day?”
Stacy shrugged. “I mentioned I had yardwork to do, and Nick kindly offered to help.”
“You volunteered for yardwork?” Kelsey said incredulously.
Nick laughed. “It was either that or go antique shopping with Fran.”
“Ah. In that case, I would have picked yardwork too. No offense.”
“None taken.”
“Okay. We really have to get back to this,” Stacy said, tapping her binder.
“Wait. It sounds like there’s more to the story.”
“No, there really isn’t.”
“Except for the rainstorm and the spaghetti,” Nick said.
“Spaghetti?” Kelsey was becoming more excited by the minute.
“We got caught in a rainstorm while we were finishing the yardwork. Then I made spaghetti, and we ate it. End of story.”
Kelsey looked at Stacy and then Nick, who simply nodded.
“Hmm. Well, it sounds like you two had a much more eventful weekend than I did.”
Just then, Fran appeared in the doorway, and Kelsey smoothly stood up and donned her professional mask. “Good morning, Fran.”
“Morning. Nick, it’s time for you to meet with Mark.”
Nick gave Stacy a questioning look.
“I was getting to that. This week, you’ll be meeting with the managers of each department. Today it’s Mark in IT.”
“Oh. Okay.” He stood, picked up his pen and binder, and started to follow Fran out. Then he turned and said, “Have a good day, ladies.”
Kelsey waited just long enough for them to walk away before she closed Stacy’s door and turned on her. “What in the world?”
Stacy held up her hands, palms out. “Before you get all excited, well, just don’t.”
“How did Bed Bath & Beyond lead to yardwork and spaghetti?”
Stacy shrugged. “There were also donuts.”
“Donuts? How does he eat donuts and pasta and look like that?”
