“This is Gillian.”
“Oh, Gillian. I’m so glad you answered.”
“Kristina?”
“Yeah. Sorry to bother you this late. Is Sam there?”
Hearing the worry in Kristina’s voice, Gillian replied, “No, but he’s okay.”
“Thank goodness.” She heaved a big sigh.
“You heard about the accident too.”
“Yeah. I was watching TV, and it came on the news. I figured Sam was either at work or with you, and I hoped he was with you.”
Gillian smiled, glad to have his sister’s support. “How’d you get my number?”
“The last time I saw Sam, I asked for it. I hope you don’t mind.”
“Mind? No. I meant to ask for yours too.”
“Well, now you have it.”
“I’m so glad you called. I was worried sick about him until Dax showed up.”
“Dax?”
“Sam contacted him and asked him to let me know he was okay.”
“That’s my brother. Always thinking of everyone else instead of himself.”
“That’s one of the things I love about him.”
Gillian clamped her hand over her mouth. Maybe she shouldn’t have shared that, but it was too late now.
“Aww. That’s so sweet. He loves you too, you know.”
“I do know.”
“I’m so happy you two got together. And by the way, I deserve some of the credit for it.”
“You do?”
“Um-hmm. The first time I saw you at the pizza place, I could tell that Sam was smitten. He told me about what happened to your fiancé, but I begged him not to give up on you.”
Gillian smiled wide even though Kristina couldn’t see her. “That was good advice, although he was doing pretty well on his own. It just took me a while to come around.”
“I understand, and since we’re on the topic, I’m sorry about your fiancé. I can only imagine how difficult that must have been.”
“Thank you, and yes, it was.” Surprisingly, Gillian didn’t tear up this time. Maybe she’d finally turned a corner and could talk about Owen without crying.
“I’m sure he was a great guy, and I don’t want to take anything away from him, but my brother is a pretty good guy too.”
“I agree, and his sister isn’t so bad either.”
Kristina laughed. “Well, I’ll let you get back to whatever it is you were doing before I called.”
“I was worrying about Sam and trying to watch Love Actually.”
