Savannah tilted her head and eyed him like she wasn’t fooled at all. “Yeah, right. You’re in better shape than most of the guys I know, and I know a lot of them!”

“Well, thank you.”

“What can I get you?”

Gillian. “Uh…”

“Oh, and by the way, Gillian’s across the street at the boutique right now. In case you were wondering.”

“Oh. Well, I’m on my break. I wasn’t sure if she’d be here or not.”

“She mentioned needing some new lingerie, so I sent her across the street.” Savannah grinned at him, and he squirmed uncomfortably.

“Anyway, I’ll take a—”

“Why don’t you go over there and surprise her?”

“Huh?”

“I’m sure she’d like to see you since it’s been so long and all.”

Sam scratched the back of his neck, unsure of how to handle the situation.

Then Savannah craned her neck and looked behind him. “Oops. Never mind. Here she comes now.”

Sam whipped his head around and saw Gillian coming through the door, holding a large shopping bag. He licked his lips at the sight of her.

He thought he’d been glowing, but she lit up the entire coffee shop as she strolled forward, and for a moment, he forgot that Savannah was even there.

“Hello, Sam.”

She’d stopped in front of him, and she was so close that he detected the sweet scent of her perfume. He would have liked to lean in and kiss her, but he obviously couldn’t, especially when they had an audience.

“Are you okay? You look a little nervous.”

He lowered his voice as much as he could. “Aren’t we being watched?”

She giggled. “Savannah went next door as soon as I walked in.”

He let out a big breath, and she laughed again.

“But she can probably see us on the monitor, so we need to be on our best behavior.”

“Right.” He folded his arms behind his back to keep from reaching for her.

“I take it you’re on a break.”

He nodded. “I came in pretending I wanted a coffee, but really I just wanted to see you.”

“I’m glad.”

Then he glanced at the shopping bag. “Savannah mentioned you went shopping.” He looked from side to side, but the coffee shop was currently empty. The sound of voices drifted in from the bookstore, though, so he assumed Savannah was occupied with a customer. “Whatcha got in there?”

“Oh, nothing.” She clutched the bag to her chest like it contained state secrets.

He leaned forward a bit. “Give me a peek.”

“No!”
