She floated back down in a blissful haze and popped her eyes open to find Sam staring at her.

“Wow,” he said.

“I think I’m supposed to be the one saying that.”

He smiled and brushed the damp hair off her face. She was keenly aware of his erection pressing against her hip, and she reached down to stroke him. He’d been so patient with her, and now she was anxious to pleasure him too.

“Do you have protection?” She assumed he’d say yes since he’d gone on a date this evening.

Surprisingly, he shook his head. Instead of feeling disappointed, she felt oddly happy. If he hadn’t brought protection on his date with Eden, he hadn’t been planning to have sex with her. Although there were other things they could have done.

Banishing thoughts of Eden from her mind, she continued to stroke him while studying his expressions at the same time.

“I’m not on the pill; otherwise…”

“It’s okay. What you’re doing is great.”

They shifted so he was lying flat and she was on her side with a leg entwined between his. Her couch wasn’t the roomiest, but since she couldn’t take him to her bedroom, it would have to do.

His eyes fluttered closed, and she nuzzled her head in his neck, kissing and nibbling his taut skin.

“Oh yeah,” he groaned when she quickened her movements on his shaft.

His skin was warm and damp, and she inhaled his distinct male scent as she kissed her way down to his chest.

She did what came naturally to her and hoped Sam liked it. Every time he moaned with pleasure, it bolstered her confidence, and her arousal reignited to match his.

She kept experimenting until she found a rhythm that he seemed especially enthused about. In the meantime, she made sure not to neglect the rest of his magnificent body, and she kissed, licked, and teased whatever she could reach.

When his whole body tensed, she knew he was close.

“Gillian…yes!”

After he ground out his release, she loosened her grip, but she didn’t let go until his muscles went slack. Then she reached over and grabbed some tissues from the box she kept on the coffee table.

It struck her that the last time she’d used the tissues was when she’d had a crying spell over Owen. But she didn’t want to think about that now.

After Sam had cleaned himself off and wadded the used tissues into a ball, there came an awkward pause. While her endorphins were still flowing, she had no idea what to do next.

To fight off impending panic, Gillian stood up and glanced around the room.

“What are you looking for?”

“Cocoa. I just realized I haven’t heard him in a while.”

Sam stood up too, still gloriously naked in the center of her living room. “Here, buddy,” he called.

Cocoa trotted in from parts unknown and looked first at Sam and then at Gillian. Was that judgment she saw in his eyes? Does he know what we just did?

Then Cocoa walked over to Sam and rubbed up against his bare leg as if he were giving him the okay or his forgiveness. Who knew?

“Good boy.” Sam rubbed Cocoa hard the way Owen used to do and the way Gillian had become convinced that all men do. Was Cocoa acknowledging Sam as the alpha male now?

She’d successfully blocked Owen from her mind while she and Sam had been making love, but now, standing naked with him in the aftermath, she felt a niggle of guilt.

When Sam turned and saw her standing there with her arms wrapped around her middle, he stopped petting Cocoa and went to her, holding out his arms in invitation. She immediately stepped into them.

“Everything okay?” he asked as he gave her a squeeze.
