Anything. “What?”

“Don’t mention this to anyone, especially not Savannah or Lauren.”

She’d scrunched up her face, and he chuckled. “I promise.”

“Good. Because if you do, I’ll never hear the end of it.”

“What part are you worried about, the nightmare or the fact that I saw you in your pajamas?” He smiled, hoping to distract her from her fears.

“I’m wearing a robe,” she argued and tucked it more tightly around herself.

Even though she was covered up, he could tell when he’d hugged her that she wasn’t wearing a bra. He’d relished having her soft curves pressed against him and would love a repeat.

Then she glanced down at his T-shirt, and he remembered what he was wearing.

She read the words and started laughing.

“What? You don’t like my shirt?”

Somehow that made her laugh even harder. Cocoa had gone to lie down in the kitchen, but now he trotted back into the room to see what all the ruckus was about.

“Police officers do it better?” she said between giggles.

He shrugged. “It’s my sleep shirt. You’re lucky I was wearing it when you called; otherwise…”

“You would have come over in your underwear?”

“Assuming I was wearing any.”

Uh-oh. He might have pushed the limit that time. She’d stopped laughing, but she didn’t avert her eyes or move away.

“I thought Stella might be spying, though, and I didn’t want to give her a show.”

Gillian laughed again, but it wasn’t as light as before. “Since I dragged you over here, would you like a drink or something?”

Something? “Sure.”

“What would you like?”

You. “What do you have to offer?”

She eyed him warily like she was trying to decide if he were flirting with her, which he was.

“I have diet pop, water, coffee, tea, and maybe a beer in the very back of the fridge. If I find one, there’s no telling how long it’s been there, though.”

She was rambling a little, and he could tell she was nervous, so he decided not to make a joke about her trying to get him drunk. “Water’s fine.”

“Okay. Be right back.”

When she stood up, her robe gaped open, and he realized the tie had somehow gotten lodged beneath his thigh. He noticed she was also wearing a T-shirt with words on it, but he couldn’t see them all.

“What does your shirt say?”

“Nothing.” She tried to tug the tie out from under him, but it wasn’t going anywhere without his consent.

“Uh-uh. You saw mine. Now you have to show me yours.”

Her eyebrows rose to the ceiling, but she looked more amused than angry. She placed her hands on her hips and cocked her head. “I bet you played that game as a boy.”
