“It’s…Matt!”

“What are you waiting for? Answer it!” Morgan urged.

“But…”

“Take the call,” Gabe repeated.

Maria lunged for her phone and answered it. Then she gave them a brief wave and hurried into the house. A minute later, Gabe noticed her bedroom light flicked on, and then he locked eyes with Morgan.

“Looks like we’re alone.”

“Yes. Finally.”

Chapter 19

Morgan jumped right in, knowing that they might not have much time. “About what happened earlier in the bedroom…”

“Yeah. About that...”

“I’m not sure what came over me. I didn’t mean to put you on the spot.”

His eyebrows raised up to his hairline. “I was the one sniffing your tank top. You have nothing to apologize for.”

She laughed, but it sounded strained.

“So, is kissing off the table now?”

She swore she heard disappointment in his voice, and she felt it too. “We probably shouldn’t.”

“Are you asking or telling?”

“Can I be honest with you?”

“Please.”

“I’d like to kiss you, but…”

“Ugh. The dreaded but!”

She continued, undeterred, anxious to get this out before Maria came back. “But it would just complicate things. I mean, we work together, and Maria is my best friend, and…”

“And you’re leaving in two more months. I’ve thought of all that too.”

She eyed him curiously. “Just today or before that?”

He hesitated for a few beats. “Does it really matter?”

“It does to me.”

“I’ve thought about kissing you a few dozen times. Today, yesterday, a few weeks ago. But like you said, it would just complicate things, and I don’t think either one of us is interested in complicating our life.”

His admission pumped her up, but the last thing he’d said shot her right back down. She gazed at him, questioning why they were trying to talk themselves out of this when it sounded like they both wanted the same thing—each other.

She licked her lips, and his eyes went right there. “I’m not sure if admitting our attraction to each other is good or bad.”

“Probably a little bit of both. On one hand, it feels good to get it off my chest.”

“But where do we go from here?”
