“I guess you won’t be needing this coffee, then.”

Damn him for knowing that was exactly what she needed. She stood up, opened the door, and motioned him inside.

Gabe set a steaming mug on the corner of her desk and turned to leave.

“Thanks,” she said to his retreating back.

“You’re welcome,” he said over his shoulder.

She sat back down and took a long sip. The warm, rich flavor traveled through her veins and instantly made her feel better. She was still savoring the moment when Stefan poked his head in.

“Is it safe now?” he teased.

“Yes. C’mon in.”

Since she’d been working there, she and Stefan had formed an interesting friendship. At times, she suspected he’d like it to be more, but he was always respectful. She’d discovered that in addition to his intellect, he had a great sense of humor and could always be counted on to make her laugh.

“Sorry for the cowgirl comment.”

“You weren’t the first one to say something.”

“The boss man?”

She nodded. “I might have gotten carried away, but I wanted to make a good impression on our client.”

“I guarantee that’ll happen.” He eyed her appreciatively, unlike Gabe, who’d scowled at her.

“Tell the truth. Do you think it’s too much?”

Stefan shook his head. “I think you look great. And regardless of what you’re wearing, I think Bryan would be a fool not to sign with you.”

“Thank you.”

“Welcome. Good luck, cowgirl!”

Morgan stood next to the whiteboard, where her presentation was being projected, while Bryan and Gabe looked on. She focused her attention on Bryan as she smoothly explained her concept for his website. She also showed him a projected timeline for completion.

Both men were quiet for the most part, seemingly intent on listening, though she caught Gabe frowning at Bryan a few times, and she wondered why.

“Do you have any questions?” she asked once she’d finished the presentation.

“Who will be maintaining the site once it’s live?” Bryan asked.

“Unfortunately, Morgan will be leaving in a couple of months, but we have several experienced staffers who can take over,” Gabe inserted.

“Leaving? Where are you going?” Bryan asked with more than a casual interest.

“I live in Michigan. I’m filling in for one of Gabe’s employees while she’s on maternity leave.”

“I see.”

“Is that a problem?” Gabe asked.

“I assure you that your website will be well maintained even after I leave.”

“Hmm.” Bryan tapped his fingers on the table and eyed her thoughtfully.

She exchanged a quick look with Gabe, but his expression was unreadable. In the meantime, her nerves were on edge as she awaited Bryan’s answer. This was the first time she’d headed a project, and she wanted it to succeed whether she’d be there to see it through or not.
