“I’d like to do it again sometime—dance with you.”
“We probably shouldn’t.”
“That doesn’t stop me from wanting to.”
Suddenly the porch light flashed, bringing their conversation to a rapid close. “I have to go.”
She quickly stepped out of the car, and she was about to close the door when he called out to her. “Plan on working late Monday so we can put the proposal together.”
She nodded. “Goodnight, Gabe.”
“Goodnight.”
Then she hurried to the front door and prepared to face his sister.
Chapter 12
Gabe waited until all his employees had left before he went down the hall to Morgan’s office. She hadn’t been working there that long, but he was already starting to think of it as her office. He liked when he walked by and saw her working, her head bent over the laptop, her curly blonde hair falling forward, her fingertips tapping the keyboard. Anytime he had an excuse to walk by or drop in, he did, but he was worried some of his employees were starting to notice. He hadn’t heard any rumblings, but he still had to watch himself, which was why he’d waited until the end of the day to approach her.
He knocked on the door frame and then entered. “Ready to start writing up our proposal?”
“Sure. I was just finishing typing up some notes.”
“Why don’t we move to the conference room, where we can spread out?” An image of her spread out on the table came to mind, and he quickly pushed it away.
She collected her things and followed him down the hall to the conference room, where he’d already set up his laptop, notepads, pens, and two bottles of water. While she got settled, he closed the door, startling her.
“Just so we won’t be disturbed.”
“There’s nobody else here.”
“The cleaning crew comes in around six.”
“Oh.”
“I took the liberty of ordering dinner since we’ll probably be here a while.”
“How’d you know what to order?”
“I have a pretty good idea what you like. We used to eat meals together all the time, remember?”
She smiled. “I ate over at your parents’ house a lot, didn’t I?”
He nodded.
“I never knew you paid attention to what I liked, though.”
He rubbed his thumb over his chin and gazed at her. She’d probably be surprised at how much he’d noticed.
“As I recall, you like grilled cheese sandwiches, spaghetti, steak, and hamburgers. You don’t like meatloaf, and you despise olives.”
She laughed. “You remember all that?”
“Um-hmm. Oh, and if given the choice between something chocolatey or any other type of dessert, you’d always pick chocolate.”
“Wow. I’m impressed.”
“See? I paid more attention to you than you thought.”
