“Still checking,” he said and then dipped a finger inside.

She arched up, chasing it as he swirled it around and flicked it over her most sensitive spot.

At present, Chase seemed like the perfect name for him. He was driving her insane with this cat-and-mouse game.

But she’d lost the will to fight as he explored her with his hand and gazed down at her with his gorgeous green eyes. She was literally putty in his hands, which might have scared her if she weren’t so turned on she couldn’t see straight.

“Chase…”

“I think you’re ready now.”

He lined himself up at her entrance and slowly guided himself inside, one amazing inch at a time.

Then he began to move. He held onto her hip for leverage and thrust forward, and she hooked a leg over his back, opening herself up even more. She was vaguely aware that the heel of her sandal was digging into his butt, yet he didn’t seem to mind.

“Callie,” he said on a puff of air. “I’m not gonna last.”

“Me either,” she said, panting.

Voicing their mutual need seemed to crack them both wide open, and they moaned and groaned while they ground out their release.

He continued to pulsate inside her as they came down, and she carefully extracted her heel from his butt.

“Ahhh,” he said against her neck.

“I know. That had to hurt.”

He popped his head up and looked at her questioningly.

“My heel in your ass.”

He chuckled and shook his head. “I meant ahhh, as in that was awesome. I barely even noticed your heel in my butt. But now that you mention it…” He reached around and massaged his butt cheek, and then he slowly withdrew and rolled off to the side.

She turned her head toward him and smiled. “I agree. It was pretty awesome.”

“I’ll go take care of this,” he said, motioning to the condom. “Be right back.”

She watched him pad naked to the bathroom and close the door behind him.

She shimmied against the damp sheets and stared up at the ceiling, replaying what had just happened. She waited for the doubts or worries to creep in, but amazingly, they didn’t. Maybe it would happen later when she was alone. But right then, her body was too flooded with endorphins for any negative feelings to take hold. In fact, all she could think about was how wonderful she felt.

It was a euphoric feeling, similar to when she’d jumped off the cliff earlier. She hadn’t considered jumping again, but she’d like to have Chase again. In fact, her body was already responding just thinking about it.

Waiting for him to come back out, she wondered if he felt the same…

Chapter 28

Chase eyed himself in the bathroom mirror and mouthed, “Wow!” He’d forgotten what good sex felt like, and now that he’d been reminded, he never wanted it to end. Problem was, it had to. Not now and not for the next few weeks, but soon enough. Neither of them had any intention of starting something and certainly not of continuing it once they’d returned to their real lives in Michigan.

Real life, Michigan, divorce attorney—three things he’d run away from. He’d never imagined he’d be running to something, or more specifically, someone. But now that he’d found her, how could he let her go?

He’d discovered the answer to one of his burning questions: would Callie be as passionate and uninhibited in bed as the romance heroines she wrote about? The answer was a resounding yes! He was getting aroused just thinking about it, and he already wanted her again. He finished drying his hands and then ran them through his rumpled hair, recalling her tugging on it at during their lovemaking. He stood there for another minute, willing his erection to go down, when suddenly Callie called out.

“Everything okay in there?”

Shit. How long had he been standing there in a maelstrom of shock, elation, and arousal?

“Coming,” he said and then winced at the connotation.
