Asher nods. “If they come back with a warrant, we can cover that up with her coming home. Her father asked to come inside, and Cam told him no. That’s when he lost his shit. Cam was calm and let her dad arrest him. That will work in his favor, if anything comes of it. But they won’t be able to hold him. He didn’t do anything to get arrested.”
“Cam was right when he said he’s just throwing his weight around?”
Asher nods. “Even with all the shit he’s been able to get away with, it won’t work this time. There is too much against him with the video and witnesses. He’s becoming reckless.”
Pacing the living room, I run my fingers through my hair. “Fuck,” I whisper.
“Does Indy know everything?”
“Yeah, unless there was anything new after Ken left tonight. We’ve been…uh, indisposed.”
Kia laughs, and I shoot him a warning glare. He cocks his eyebrow.
“Now, I know why she’s asleep so early,” Lain says, chuckling softly.
“There is something else—nothing like the sterilization, the chief’s wife, or Jennifer’s murder. He is in line to acquire Burt’s position.”
I jerk my head toward him. “What the fuck?”
“It’s a good thing this came about now and not after he got that promotion. All those files would have been lost.”
I nod. I don’t doubt that at all.
“The sterilization?” Lain whispers, her bright eyes finding mine.
“He had her sterilized when she was twelve years old,” I spit. Her gasp echoes around my living room. “Her sister, too.”
“I didn’t know she had a sister.”
“Jenny. He killed her.” Lain and Kia’s eyes grow wide. “She and her sister were abused for a long time.”
“The scars?” Kia asks.
I nod. “It’s really fucked, man.”
Asher nods with me. “As much as Cam and Ken want this to go the legal route, I don’t think we have time.”
“And I don’t think she has the strength to continue to relive this.”
Asher sighs. “And she’s right in thinking he’ll come after you. Clearly, she knows him well enough to know he’d do something like this.”
The code on the door sounds as Cam and Ken walk in. “A welcoming party?” Cam sings, still shirtless.
“What the fuck happened?” I grab him, pulling him into me.
He huffs, “I told you. He was trying to scare us.”
“It fucking worked.”
“Jay,” he says as he peels me off of him, “I’m fine. I did that on purpose.” I back off further, looking for him to continue. “I figured he was going to do it when I saw he had his car. I know the law, Jay. It was better for me to go than you.”
“You were really fucking calm being arrested, man.”
“I thought it was kind of funny.” He shrugs like it’s no big deal, like I didn’t just see my future wash down the drain with the dimming lights of that cop car.
