I hit the answer button.

“What?”

“Where y'all at?” Rome asked immediately.

I tightened my hand around the steering wheel. “On the fucking highway, Rome. Where you think we at?”

“How far?”

“Twenty-two minutes.”

There was a short silence.

“You said twenty-three five minutes ago.”

My eyebrows shot up. “Nigga, are you tracking me now?”

Zari folded forward laughing.

Even Ma's lips twitched before she caught herself.

Rome ignored me. “You got the ring?”

I stared through the windshield.

This motherfucker.

“Nah, Rome. I pawned it.”

“Kai.”

“Yes, I got your damn ring.”

“The pastor?”

“Handled.”

“He knows where to come?”

“Yes.”

“You got Halo?”

I glanced in the mirror at the little girl happily kicking her feet.

“Yes.”

“Zari?”

Zari raised her hand like Rome could somehow see her. “Unfortunately.”

I smirked.

“And Ma?” Rome asked.

I slowly turned my head toward the woman sitting two feet away from me. “Unfortunately, yes.”

Ma's head snapped in my direction.
