Exhausted.

There was a difference.

The baby was awake now, clean and dressed in a little outfit from the diaper bag. She rested against Sol’s hip, blinking around my kitchen with big brown eyes.

Sol caught me staring.

“What?”

I cleared my throat. “Nothing.”

“You always staring.”

“Probably.”

She shook her head, but I caught the faint smile.

I pointed toward the food. “Come eat.”

“Rome, you ordered all this?”

“Yeah.”

“For three people?”

“I didn’t know what y’all wanted.”

Her eyebrows lifted. “So you ordered the whole restaurant?”

“Basically.”

That earned me another quiet laugh.

We got the baby situated first. I found an old high chair in one of the storage closets that Sugga had insisted I keep after some family function years ago.

When I sat it down, Sol looked at me.

“You just got baby equipment hiding around here?”

“My mama.”

“Of course.”

I smiled. “You’ll understand if you ever meet her.”

The words left my mouth before I thought about them.

*If you ever meet her.*

Sol heard it too.

Her eyes met mine for a second.

Neither of us addressed it.

She sat down and began fixing a plate for the baby.

“What does she eat?” I asked.
