His fingers tap once against the steering wheel.

Turning in the seat, I stare at him. "Is it true, Gabriel? Is my uncle involved?"

"Not specifically."

Cold slips through me. That can't be good.

He exhales. "Turner wanted your family to believe mine took you."

For a second, I just stare at him. If his family took me, my uncle would scorch the earth to get me back and destroy them. "So Turner's real issue is with your family."

He glances at me, surprised. "To say he wouldn't mind getting us off his back is an understatement."

"This seems like a complicated way to do it."

He shrugs. "It's been a complicated night."

My gaze drops briefly to his hands on the wheel. There's blood beneath his thumbnail. "So Turner wanted my uncle to come after your family."

"Yes."

"And then what?"

"Everybody gets angry. Everybody gets armed. Turner sits back and enjoys the show."

It’s a good plan. That’s exactly how it’ll go down if my uncle believes Gabriel took me forcibly. I frown. "Why?"

Gabriel nods once. "That's one of the things I'm going to ask him when I catch up with him."

"You don't know."

"I have theories."

"Which are?"

"Mine."

I roll my eyes. Typical macho man answer. "I'm considering opening the car door."

He glances at me. "You’d jump out at eighty miles an hour?"

"I'm considering opening your door."

His smile comes slowly. "Are you flirting with me, Duchess?"

I roll my eyes again. "You think attempted murder is flirting?"

"Some would call it a love language."

My brain points out that Gabriel killed for me tonight. My pulse gives one hard, deeply unhelpful beat. I turn toward the window. "Does Turner know you have me?"

"He knows I was coming for you."

"That wasn't my question."

"No." A beat. "Not yet."

That yet lodges beneath my ribs. It won’t be long given the bodies we left behind at the museum. "And when he finds out?"
