Trying to keep herself small and unnoticeable doesn’t work. I’m a shark in the water, and she’s vulnerable, bleeding, and weak.

“Get lost,” I say to Derrick.
He turns his head toward me, his eyebrows raised. “What the fuck?”
I widen my strides toward my car.
“Seriously, Elijah?” Derrick calls. “You’re going to leave me behind for some pussy?”
I unlock the doors with the key fob and slip behind the wheel. The engine purrs to life, and I don’t bother buckling my seatbelt. I don’t plan to stay in the car for long.
I drive out of the parking lot and tap the brakes to slow the car beside Eden. I roll down the window. “Where are you going?”
Eden turns her guarded stare toward me. “For a walk.”
I frown. “Where to?”
“Why does it matter to you?”
She keeps walking, and I keep the car at the same pace as her strides.
“Maybe because I want to spend time with you,” I say.
She lets out a dry laugh and shakes her head. “No, you don’t.”
I sigh. “Get in the car, Eden.”
“No.”
“It’s not that hard to accept help,” I say.
“You’re right.” She stops walking and turns toward me with her hands resting on her hips. “But I don’t want your help. You shouldn’t even be talking to me.”
I frown. “There you go again, talking about what I should and shouldn’t be doing.”
Her shoulders droop, and she glances toward the school behind us.
“It’s for the best,” she mumbles.
“Leave it to me to know what’s best for myself.”
Her gaze slips to me. Sadness leaches into her eyes, and she shakes her head before walking away. “I don’t want to be around you.”
“That’s too bad, birdie. Why aren’t you using your car, anyway?” I tap the gas to keep up with her.
“Because I don’t want to.”
What a spoiled little brat.
Is it because the car was a birthday gift from my father? Does she think she’s too good to accept her stepfather’s gift?
When she got the car, she looked so troubled when he uncovered her eyes to show her. “Because every girl deserves a pink Corvette,” he’d said.
“At least allow me to give you a ride to wherever you need to go,” I say, getting back on topic.
Eden stops and turns her whole body toward me. I hit the brakes and stop next to her. I even flash my flirtatious smile that no one can resist.
