Well, hello to you, too.
“I haven’t found the time to shop yet,” I responded, sounding just as bored as him.
Jacob snorted. “Been busy looking for a way out?”
I sat down on what was now my chair, and tilted my head at Jacob. “There’s a way out?”
That only made the vampire smile wider. “Not one you will find anytime soon.”
Harland then cut in, giving me a reassuring smile. “Normally, the sacrifices spend their first few years here trying to figure out how to break the blood vow. We do not blame you if you do the same. It is only natural to want to escape.”
Jacob scoffed at that. “They are here for twenty-nine years and go mad trying to escape. What about us who have been here for over eight hundred years? Do they truly not realize that if there was a way out, we would have found it already?”
I’d been too busy trying to figure out my weird reaction to Jacob to even think about escaping. What did that say about me?
“There is a way out,” Alexander said, like it was something the others already knew.
“Likely not for all of us,” Harland reminded him.
Alexander then rubbed his temples, suddenly looking tired, or like he was fighting a nasty headache. Harland placed his hand on his arm, the touch gentle. “You need to feed tonight, Alex.”
“You need it as well,” Alexander said, smiling softly at Harland. I couldn’t breathe for a second as Alexander’s entire face changed with his smile. I had no idea he could look so… handsome? What the fuck is up with me lately?
“You need it more,” Harland countered, placing a soft kiss on Alexander’s cheek.
“And I,” Jacob cut in, grinning wide. “Will be available if needed.”
Alexander scoffed. “I doubt it.”
Jacob looked my way, grin widening further. “Oh, trust me, you likely will.”
I had no idea what they were referring to, and as Nicco placed food in front of me, I decided to focus on that instead.
“He is right,” Harland said, chuckling softly. “Jacob basically attacked me last night.”
Jacob sighed dreamily. “Such a romantic night.”
Alexander scoffed, still looking tired. His eyes were soft, though, watching Jacob with adoration.
I suddenly felt like I was in the twilight zone. Alexander could look like that?!
“Eat up,” Jacob said, pointing to my plate. I’d forgotten to eat, too enraptured by Alexander smiling to focus on anything else.
Forking a piece of potato, I began stuffing my face, all while wondering what it would feel like to feed Alexander. I bet it wouldn’t be anything like it had been with Jacob.
“How are you settling in?” Jacob asked. I was so busy thinking about what was happening to my body and if magic was involved, that I hadn’t realized he was speaking to me. “Colin?”
I blinked over at him, swallowing my food. “Yes?”
He smiled. “Are you settling in okay?”
“Oh, yes.” My mind flashed to those racecars in my bathroom. The ones that kept reappearing, even though I kept hiding them away.
“We are glad to hear that,” he said, looking like he truly meant it. “Believe it or not, but we do not wish this fate on anyone.”
Strangely enough, I believed him.
“Now eat up,” he said, shooting me a wink. “My man needs to feed and I need to reap the benefits after.”
