Colin’s eyes went wide. “Fuck, how will we make money?!”
I snorted at his panicked look. “We do not need money, my precious.”
“Um, I really think we do,” he objected.
Smiling, I pecked his cheek. “We have the brownies.”
“You’re not making any sense.”
Sophie grinned. “Brownies are magical, Colin. Wherever they live, everything is paid for.”
“Oh,” Colin said.
“We each were granted a brownie when we were freed,” Adam explained. “Ours told us that they were tasked with keeping us safe from the witch coven.”
“Yeah,” Sophie said, frowning. “Apparently two brownies lost their masters because they were murdered. The new brownies aren’t loyal to the coven anymore, but to their masters. They warned us to stay safe.”
Adam then frowned, deep in thought. “We were never told who’d sent the brownies to us, though.”
Orion then stepped into the kitchen. “Why are you all gathered here?”
I handed him a bowl of something green and leafy. “We are making food.”
Colin snorted. “You mean Nicco made the food and we’re warming it up.”
“Yes,” I said, smirking at Colin.
Jacob rushed into the room, eyes wild and excited. “If we feed Colin our blood, he will grow stronger!”
“What?” I asked.
Jacob was nodding eagerly. “Charles told me if we feed him just a drop of our blood, he will be much harder to kill.”
“It’s true,” Sophie shrugged. “Your energy levels will increase as well. The downside is you’ll need more food to fuel all of that energy, but less sleep is needed.”
“Oh,” I said, grabbing a small knife. I nicked my skin and held out my finger for Colin.
“Um, what?” Colin said, eyeing the dripping blood with horror.
“We need you at your strongest,” Jacob urged, taking my hand and forcing my finger into Colin’s mouth. Colin choked from the impact, but then sucked and swallowed my blood, grimacing at the taste.
“Me now!” Jacob announced biting his own wrist. Colin just sighed and lapped up some of his blood.
“Where is Harland?” I asked, looking around the crowded kitchen.
“The dining room,” Adam replied. “He is talking to Eric about the paintings.”
Of course, he was. Now that the mansion was ours, Harland was determined to hand over the portraits to Eric. We simply hated them. I just hoped my lover had broached the subject in a calm manner.
“Wait,” Colin said, interrupting me from grabbing Harland. “I need to know more about the brownies and so should you.”
“What about them?” Jacob asked, licking his wound clean.
Colin had everyone's attention. “Well, first off, why did the coven offer you brownies if they wanted you dead? And second, why did the loyalties change so the new ones are warning the freed vampires and sacrifices?”
Sophie’s forehead wrinkled as she looked deep in thought. “I never even thought about that. Our brownie told us they were loyal to the sacrifice blood line, not the witch coven.”
“Did their loyalties change?” I asked.
