Hey, when you’re up, can you give me a call?
I put my phone in my pocket and see Captain walking in.
“Morning,” he says, a to-go cup of coffee in his hand, “you’re here bright and early.”
“Well, if your house was broken into, you would be too,” I mumble, and he nods. “We got nothing.”
“Yeah, that’s what they said.” He sighs. “We have a meeting with the team in an hour.”
“Good, I want names.” I grit my teeth. “They fucked with my house. If I don’t pay anyone a visit, they are going to think they got the upper hand.”
“We have to go in smart,” he advises. “Ask the right people.”
I nod as my phone rings, and I check the screen. “I have to take this.” He continues to his office as I put the phone to my ear.
“Hey.”
“Hey,” Theo replies, “how you doing?”
“Could be better. Someone broke into Finley’s place two days ago.”
“What?” he asks, confused.
“Yeah, I can’t get into it. But it has to do with a case I’m working.”
“Fuck. What did they take?”
“Nothing as far as we could tell, but they did some damage. Broke the lock to get in. Can you drop by today and see if you can fix it?”
“Yeah, I’ll go by this morning, around ten. I’m assuming Finley is there.”
“Where the fuck else would she be?” It comes out more aggressive than I intended, but he just laughs.
“Well, considering she’s got shit happening to her at home, and now shit here, who knows? Maybe she’ll take off.” I feel the blood drain from my body. “Hello, you still there?”
“I’m here.” I look out the window. “She’s there now, but she’s going to get Asa at nine.”
“No problem. If the lock is broken, she won’t need to be there to let me in. I’ll pick up a more secure lock and get it installed.”
“Thanks, I appreciate it.” I hang up the phone, then head down the stairs and outside for some privacy. I call Finley.
“Whoa. Calling so soon? Either I did something you really don’t like”—she laughs—“or you just pocket-dialed me.”
“Just checking in,” I lie as I try to calm myself down. “Seeing if you are okay.” I can hear birds in the background.
“Why wouldn’t I be okay? I’m sitting outside, having a cup of coffee. I had a very good night and an even better morning. I would say I’m more than okay, but the last thing we need is to feed your ego.”
I chuckle. “Okay, good. Theo is going to stop by this morning and fix the door.”
“Oh,” she says, her voice going low, “okay.”
The phone rings, and I see it’s Maggie. “I have to go, baby. Call you later.”
“I’ll text you when I get Asa,” she says, and I press a button to accept the call from Maggie.
“Hello.”
“Oh, good,” she says, “I didn’t know if you would answer or not.”
