Slow steps created enough time for my racing heart to calm down. When I returned to his side, the pillow was still in his lap as he gulped down a cold bottle of water.
“The tightness went down a lot. The swelling seems to have eased up too. Please don’t move around without your crutches anymore. I’m serious.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
As I cleaned up for the day, I could feel his eyes following my every move.
“What?”
“I got a question.”
“Oh, Lord. What?”
His laugh tickled my ears. “Put the Glock down, Meadow.”
“Whoops. What’s your question, sir?”
“What’s your dream vacation?”
I raised a brow. “Huh? Where’d that come from?”
“I just want to get to know you. Ease some of the animosity between us. Let some bonding seep through the cracks and whatnot. Especially if you’re going to pull up on me seven days a week and potentially live here for many months.”
“My dream vacation is somewhere cold with fluffy snow. I’m a Texas girlie, born and raised, and we rarely get enjoyable snow. If it snows, it usually results in violent power outages and black ice on the roads. I want to go somewhere that gets snow often enough it doesn’t present as a danger to people around. Hot chocolate, fireplace crackling, and cozy blankets to keep me warm.”
“I have a family cottage in Canada that has exactly what you’re looking for. You might see some moose though.”
“Immediately no. Do you know how big those things can get?”
“Yes, I do.”
“I don’t play with big, dangerous animals. Give me a cute animal I can hold in my hand any day, but never something that’s seven feet tall and thousands of pounds. Nope. Nope. Nope!”
“They mind their business if you mind yours.”
“Sounds good.”
Platinum laughed deep within his gut. I enjoyed hearing him laugh. It was deep and contagious.
Seddrick walked in as I logged out of my iPad and slid it into a compartment in my backpack.
“What’s up, P. Good afternoon, Meadow.”
“Hey, Seddrick.” I greeted him.
“Where you been?” Platinum asked.
“Minding my business. You should try it.”
“Fuck yo’ bowling pin head ass.” Platinum tossed a pillow at Seddrick who tossed it back.
“Men act like bad-ass toddlers.” I shook my head and tossed my backpack over my shoulder. “I’m going to head out for the day now that Seddrick is here. Please stay off your knee as much as possible and always use those crutches. You hear me?”
Platinum nodded. “Yes, ma’am.”
“Great. I’ll see you in the morning.”
As I headed out of the house, my heart skipped a beat. The tension was gone. We enjoyed more easygoing conversations. I looked forward to returning tomorrow.
