Colton approached, phone in hand. “You’ll be able to monitor all feeds from the same app. Harper too, once I set up her access.”
I turned. “What are you dancing around? Just say it.”
The guys exchanged a look.
Knox leaned closer. “Do you know Harper is a big deal country music singer?” He kept his voice low. “Sloane flipped when I mentioned her name, and we spent an hour last night going through all the videos and social media stuff about her. She opened for some of Sloane’s favorite artists this year.”
Colton went back to work. Smiling, because he was a country music fan and probably knew all about her the moment he set eyes on her, but he hadn’t said a word.
I glared.
Knox hiked his brows to his hairline, waiting for my reaction.
“Yeah,” I said. “She told me.”
“And?”
I shrugged. “What?”
“She dated Julio Rodriguez, that badass from the Mariners. She’s been photographed at A-list parties in LA, and out to dinner with that guy from Bridgerton.” He frowned. “Sloane loves that show.”
“I do not care.” I said the words slowly. “She’s also someone who needs our help.”
He looked at me as if I’d sprouted a new head. “Yeah, I know that. I just think it’s cool. Jeez.”
The screen door opened behind us, and Harper’s energy spread through the atmosphere like an approaching storm.
“Hey,” she said, voice uncharacteristically tentative.
Knox straightened, red-faced, like a teenager caught gossiping at a sleepover.
I forced myself not to laugh at him when I looked at her. She’d removed the ballcap, but her hair was still wrangled into a messy knot on top of her head. No makeup. Her sneakers didn’t even have laces.
I’d seen her onstage in the glitter and heels, full hair and makeup, done professionally. She looked like an angel either way.
“We’re almost done,” I said.
She formed a small smile with her full pink lips. “I appreciate you doing all this.” Her gaze moved from me to Knox and Colton. “I made a pot of coffee if anyone wants some. And there’s always a pitcher of sweet tea in the fridge.”
Knox grinned. “That is exactly what I need. Thank you.”
“Me too,” Colton said.
Harper’s gaze landed on me, waiting.
My throat tightened. “Thanks.”
Her polite expression dimmed. “I’ll be right back.”
Dammit.
The silence stretched as she retreated inside.
Knox waited until the door closed. “You’re an idiot.”
I grimaced. “Focus.”
“I am focused. On the idiot standing next to me.”
