We pulled apart quickly and did as told.

Bea came out from a fire truck, her foot freshly bandaged. “No, he’s the good brother!”

The police relaxed their guns and came forward. Another truck pulled up, and the door flew open.

“What did you do to my baby!” Mrs. Delambre screamed as she sprinted toward us. I stepped aside for her to go to Asher. I was shocked when she tackled me to the ground. The air in my lungs rushed out as she sat on top of me, flailing her fists in my direction. “You bitch! You did this!”

Asher and a policeman had to pull her off me and hold her as she kicked.

“Get off her! Jesus Christ,” Ash swore. “Andi wasn’t the killer, Ma. Sawyer was,” he explained as I picked myself back up.

“Was?” Her face crumpled, and she sobbed as she realized what that meant. The two men took her to the porch and sat her down in a chair. Asher returned to my side just as Bea came up, walking with crutches.

“I showed them the feeds. I knew all the passwords, so I was able to log in once I got into town. Sorry it took so long. I was disabling the traps as I went.”

“It’s fine,” I said. “Thank you for getting help here when you did.”

“Is it just you two left?” she asked.

We nodded grimly.

She frowned. “I suspected it would end this way. If I’d known his true intentions with this project, I wouldn’t have helped. I’m sorry for that.”

“No one, not even Sawyer, knew what was going to happen,” Asher replied. “Something in him snapped a long time ago, but he was very good at hiding it. No one can blame themselves for this.” He was looking at Bea while he said it, but I knew he was talking to me.

I’d killed Sawyer.

And I’d live with that for the rest of my life.

“I want fingerprints and DNA testing. Gunshot ballistics. Every sort of test you can do to see just what lies she’s telling you all!” Mrs. Delambre screeched before she began to sob again. “My baby. Where is he? Is he in there?”

Everyone turned to look at us. All the paramedics and firemen and police had gathered around to hear what exactly had happened. Asher clutched me tight to him and cleared his throat. “Sawyer is not inside. His body is in there.” He pointed to the trees. “And you won’t need to get fingerprints, he recorded everything.”

A slow panic crawled over me, remembering what I’d seen on Sawyer’s laptop. The video of Asher killing Ray was on it. If they were going to take it all into evidence...

“Is there anyone in that house that is still alive?” A policeman asked. “Is there anything we need to prepare for before going inside the home?”

Asher shook his head. “No. It’s safe to go in. It’s just the two of us left.”

The team of paramedics, firemen, and police surged inside, leaving Bea, Asher, and me on the lawn.

“Why is she making that face?” Bea asked Asher. I blinked, not realizing I’d been showing my stress on the outside. I cleared my throat.

“Sawyer had some videos on his laptop that I hadn’t known about. Videos of him and me…”

“Those are gone,” Asher blurted. “People will only see what happened here.”

“And then what?” I asked. Would I be arrested? I had killed Juliet and Sawyer, after all. And he’d taken part in disposing of Lux.

“I don’t know,” Asher admitted. “Come on, let’s...get some air.” Taking my hand, he led me away from the house. A policeman came out and warned us not to go far, and Asher waved, acknowledging he’d heard him. We walked through the soaked grass until we found ourselves back in the trees.

I was curious why until I realized it was me leading the way, not Ash.

“Where are we going?” he asked.

“I have to say goodbye.”

We found the gravesite relatively quickly, and Asher let me go alone, stepping back so I could have my moment with Sawyer.
