“I’m done for tonight,” she said through the door.

“Oh, come on, Rona,” Bain complained from the hallway. “None of this is my fault.”

Was he joking?

“You dragged me off the dance floor and behind a coat rack, where you proceeded to…” She wasn’t sure what to say next. ‘Get me off’ sounded so crass.

“Rock your world?” came the smug reply.

“Not even close,” she said.

“Rona, you can’t lie about this,” he said cheerily. “It isn’t just your word against mine. We have independent witnesses.”

She covered her face with her hands. “Go away,” she wailed, a little desperately.

There was silence for a minute, and she began to think he’d done as he was told for a change.

“Wouldn’t you rather I came inside and we finished what we started downstairs?” he purred with pure seduction.

Yes, please, her traitorous body screamed.

“No,” she said. “I think I’ve had quite enough for tonight.”

He sighed. It was plaintive. “I’m sure you have. Auch well, I guess I’ll just take my blue balls home to bed—alone.”

“You’d better be alone,” Rona snapped before smacking a hand over her mouth.

Bain’s laughter sounded through the door.

“See? I knew you cared. Don’t worry, Rona. I’ll be all alone in my bed, dreaming of you. See you tomorrow,” the devil said before she heard him saunter away.

“Not if I can help it,” Rona muttered, as she threw herself onto the bed. “That wasn’t supposed to happen,” she told the ceiling. “I’m weak. That’s what it is. Bain touches me and all the sensible, smart reasons that I have for keeping away from him disappear from my head. They just vanish. Like poof! Then I turn into some sex-crazed hussy who orgasms in a corridor.” She let out a wail of disgust. “That’s it. I’m done. No more Bain for me.”

Tom casually strode up the length of her body to sit on her chest. He stared her in the eye and meowed a loud demand.

“What is it with the male of the species?” she asked him. “Are you all out to harass me tonight? Can’t you see I’m in crisis here? I can’t sleep with Bain because I can’t cope with him walking away the next day. There’s only so much rejection a person can take in a lifetime. And I’ve had my fill. You understand, right?”

Tom Cat lifted a huge paw and smacked her nose. At least he’d kept his claws in.

“That’d better be a demand for treats and not a reprimand at my plan to avoid Bain,” she huffed.

He lifted his paw again. This time there were claws.

“Fine,” Rona said, sitting up. “I’ll give you cat treats.”

Man, she was a pushover.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Rona was avoiding Bain. And he wasn’t happy about it.

“That’s the tenth message I’ve left for her today,” he complained to Kade. “It keeps going to voicemail.”

They were on the building site of Invertary’s new dental clinic. The main structure was up and they were working on the interior, which would have gone a lot faster if the owners hadn’t kept changing their minds about where the walls should go.

“Must be a new experience for you,” Kade said, as he packed up his tools. “Usually, you’re the one dodging calls the following day.”

“This, big brother,” Darach said, “is what is commonly known as karma.” He shared a grin with his twin.
