“We’re prepared to discuss additional concessions,” he says.

“Then discuss them.”

He leans back, seeming annoyed. “Mr. Osipov could avoid a trial. He could avoid the possibility of a significantly longer sentence.”

“Could,” I repeat. “Or he could be convicted of charges the prosecution hasn’t actually proven.”

The prosecutor’s expression tightens. Mikhail remains silent.

Then comes the real offer.

“There is another option.”

I already know what it is.

“If Mr. Osipov is willing to cooperate with the investigation into Mr. Borisov’s organization—”

“No,” Mikhail says.

The prosecutor pauses.

“Mr. Osipov, you haven’t heard the full—”

“Then tell me.”

I glance at him. I’m not surprised; Vasily seems to inspire loyalty in his men. Of course that has reached Mikhail, his previously white-collar accountant.

There’s something different in Mikhail’s expression now. Less fear, more confidence.

The prosecutor looks between us.

“Cooperation could substantially reduce his exposure.”

He explains the proposed reduction, the testimony they want, and the obligations that would continue after sentencing. I make him repeat the conditions and ask for the terms in writing. Mikhail listens without interrupting this time. When I ask whether he wants to discuss it privately, he shakes his head.

“I won’t do it.” Mikhail doesn’t raise his voice. There’s no twitch of a muscle in his cheek, no hesitancy.

“You’re willing to spend decades in prison rather than provide information?”

Mikhail looks at me. I give him a small nod. He turns back.

“Yes. Because there’s no information to provide. Mr. Borisov’s business is legitimate.”

The prosecutor clenches his teeth, drumming fingers against the conference table in a disjointed staccato.

I gather my papers, the adrenaline rush of getting back in the saddle making me antsy.

“We’re done.”

He starts to protest, but I’m already standing. Mikhail follows me.

As we walk out, I feel energized. Not because we won; we’re nowhere near winning, not yet. But because they just showed us exactly what they’re afraid of.

And now I know where to start looking.
