He wasn’t entirely sure what gave the guy away. Maybe Osian could sense the shifting magic in his blood, or was it his eyes, the light in his pupils? The way he looked at him as he put everything on a tray on the countertop, told him he knew Osian wasn’t mortal, but he hadn’t figured out what he was.
Osian paid and carried the tray outside.
“Any thoughts on the place?” Osian asked as Drum forked up a piece of sponge.
“Nice cake.”
“Empty your mouth before I tell you who made it.”
“Should I swallow?” Drum mumbled, his eyes wide.
“Yes.” Osian ate a piece too. “Mmm. It is good.”
“So who made it?” Drum asked.
“Well, he might not have made the cake, but he served it.”
“Tell me.”
“He’s a werewolf.”
Chapter Fifteen
Drum thought he must have misheard.
“No, you didn’t mishear,” Osian said. “And yes, I know what you were thinking. And I’m pretty sure the cute guy with blue hair in the barely-there shorts is a faery.”
“Cute?” Drum narrowed his eyes. “Barely-there shorts?”
“Oh, jealous?” Osian grinned. “And that’s what you pick up on?”
“Yes!”
“I like it when you pretend to be pissed off.”
“Who says I’m pretending?” But Drum smiled. For a moment, anyway. “So what does that mean?”
“Well, when it’s a full moon, the—”
Drum stepped on his foot under the table.
“Ouch.” Osian sighed. “I don’t know. I’ve never met a faery on this side before. I’ve never met a werewolf.”
“But you still knew.”
Osian nodded. “And he’ll work out what I am sooner or later.”
Drum took a swig of his lemonade. “And that I’m a changeling?”
“Unlikely.”
“Are we in danger?”
“Do you feel in danger?”
Drum thought about it. He felt slightly uneasy, as if there was something hovering out of reach that he couldn’t quite see, but not danger. “No,” he said finally.
He took out his phone and was almost surprised to see he had a signal. So the place wasn’t that weird.
