“How do you know they’re renovating?” I inquired, thinking through my calls with Bay.

He hadn’t mentioned anything.

“I talk to Blaire,” she replied, before shrugging. “And I get the occasional spare thought from Jack about the price of all the wood they had. At first, I wasn’t sure what was going on. Knowing him, it could be strippers or two-by-fours. But Blaire told me they’d bought an old house near Nate’s and were fixing it up.”

“Huh.”

“Shh.”

I threw my arms out, whispering-shouting, “What? I was quiet.”

“We’re almost there,” she told me, holding her finger to her lips. “He’ll hear you before he hears me. Your voice travels.”

I rubbed my middle finger up and down my forehead. “His truck is in the garage. How are we going to get it?”

Barbie rolled her bright eyes. “I have a plan for that.”

“Does it include breaking and entering?”

“Funny you should ask,” she snarked. “It’s a gray area.”

“How so?”

She pulled a small remote to her hand and waved it at me. “I have Jack’s remote to the garage door.”

“Because he gave it to you?” I guessed.

Sloane snorted. “No.”

“So, you stole it?”

“Borrowed,” she corrected. “I’m going to give it back.”

“Opening the door is going to wake Bay up,” I pointed out.

She stopped, pursing her lips as she stared down the street. “We could drive through it?”

“What?” I asked, outraged at the thought of destroying someone else’s house. “No.”

“I thought you might say that,” she acknowledged, tipping her head. “So we’re going to mist into the garage, get in his truck, and then open the door. When he comes running in, we’ll give him the salute and drive away.”

“I don’t even know what to say.”

“Are you driving or am I?”

I sighed. “I’d like to not die today.”

“You wouldn’t stay dead.”

“Still hurts.”

She smiled, all teeth and mischief. “Pus—”

“Don’t.”

“Sssy,” she drawled, tilting her head to the left as she waited for me to argue.

“You’re a worse instigator than the demon.”
