“None.”

“So, it was just us, huh?”

She nodded. “You’re our biggest client. You know that.”

I nodded.

“Jenny, don’t talk to anyone about it yet. I don’t want Junior or Wylie Senior to come at you. Let Harvey and me talk, then we’ll talk to Wylie Senior. I don’t want you in the crosshairs.”

Her chin jutted out. “I can handle it.”

Great, another stubborn woman.

“Jenny, I have no doubt that you can handle it. None at all. After all, you are Beckett Brooks’ daughter.” She and I both grinned. “However, I would just like all of your ducks in a row before you do. Do you trust me?”

“Fine. Whatever.”

“Thanks. And thanks for doing the right thing.”

“For that, Renzo, you will never have to thank me. That’s always my path.”

“Well, thank you anyway. Not everyone takes that path.”

On my way to Harvey’s house, I called Millie again, expecting her voicemail. I was stunned when she actually answered.

“Hello, Renzo.”

I took a moment to savor the sound of her voice.

“Hi, Millie. I’d ask you why you decided to pick up, but I have a policy to never look a gift horse in the mouth.”

She giggled. I savored that as well.

“I’m glad you picked up. I didn’t want to show up unannounced.”

“How come I’m not surprised that was going to be your next play?” she teased.

This time I chuckled. “Maybe because you’ve gotten to know me?”

“Maybe a little bit. Were you planning on bringing chocolates?”

“I only bring chocolates if I know there will be food waiting for me.”

“There’s always food at my house.”

Was I imagining it, or did her voice sound a little sexier?

“Okay, I have to ask. Why did you decide to answer the phone this time?”

She sighed. This I didn’t savor. As a matter of fact, I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the thought of her having to gather her courage to talk to me.

“For the record, you weren’t the only one who suggested I research other burn victims. My friend Dr. Rose has been telling me to do this for years.”

I waited.

“So, I did.”

I waited some more. When I was met by silence, I prodded. “What did you find?”
