I held my thumb and forefinger together. “Little bit. But…I get it.”
He muttered something under his breath and then set his beer bottle down at the bar. “Let me give you a ride.”
“That’s okay.”
“Lil, we’re going to the same place. Unless you have your car.”
“No, Mari’s car is in the shop, so we’re sharing,” I explained.
“Then let me drive.”
“Okay,” I relented.
He settled his bill with Hal, who smiled at me and told me not to work too hard. Hal was so nice, and I loved working for him. I loved Veronica, but she was awful at keeping her receipts together. Hal was very organized, telling me that my assumptions that he only hired me as a favor were correct.
Logan put his hand on the small of my back and guided me out of the bar. We got into his car, and he sped off toward Old City.
“How was the game?” I asked.
He frowned.
“Bad?”
“We lost.”
“Sorry.”
He shook his head. “Not your fault, princess.”
“Still sucks.”
“Mmmhmm,” he murmured. “Were you working late tonight?”
“Yeah. I had that interview this morning, so I had to shift my hours.”
Last night, he’d talked me down from my nerves. Worrying about the interview kept me up, so I’d turned on Dragonspire to calm me down. Fighting dragons with him in our game had been the only solution to quiet my anxiety.
I shrugged. “I don’t think I got it. Been busy building my client list.”
“That’s good. Noah said D hired you to help with her author stuff.”
I nodded. Not only did Dinah hire me to do her author quarterly taxes, but the annual filing for her and Noah. I’d be really busy in the months to come if this kept up.
Logan put a hand on my thigh. “That’s great.”
“It’s a slow build, but I have to…”
“For her,” he answered.
I blew out a breath. “It’s nice to talk to someone who gets it. Veronica and Blaise try to be helpful, but they don’t get how much I work my ass off and struggle. And then fucking Seth!” I clamped my mouth closed. Logan didn’t want to hear me complain about my ex again.
Logan pulled his car into the garage of his building and put it in park. “Did he flake on you again?”
I nodded, fighting the tears that were brimming. Being a single mother was the hardest thing I ever had to do. There were days I wasn’t sure I’d manage it much longer. If I didn’t have my sister, if my mom didn’t let me live at home rent-free, I wasn’t sure I could handle it.
He squeezed my hand. “I completely understand. If you never recommended your sister, I’d be fucked.”
“Mari’s amazing with the kids. I love that they get along.”
