She smiled. “Why do you keep calling me that?”
I brushed her hair away from her face. “Because you deserve someone to treat you like one. I can’t do that.”
She cupped my face. “I don’t need that. I just needed to get laid. Logan, I know how chaotic your life is; I’m probably the only person who gets that. I’m not looking for a relationship, either. But…”
I held her face in my hands and looked deep into her eyes. “But, what?”
“If you’re looking for some occasional fun with no strings, let me know.”
I was not opposed to that. Not like I couldn’t get laid on my own. But honestly, the girls on the road who just wanted you because you were a hockey player got old. At the same time, I didn’t know if a friends-with-benefits situation was a good idea. Feelings could get in the way.
“It’s not a marriage proposal!” she told me with a laugh. “I gotta get going anyway.”
She climbed out of bed and put her clothes back on. I lay in bed for a minute and watched her. I really liked her, but we couldn’t have anything real. There was definitely something that drew me to her like a magnet, though.
She laughed. “It’s funny you called me princess.”
“Why?”
She pulled on her cardigan. “Because the character I play in Dragonspire wears a crown. People always ask me if she’s supposed to be a wood elf princess.”
I stared at her for a long time.
She played as a wood elf. That made so much sense; she was tiny like the Elves in the game.
Flower also played as a wood elf, and I made that joke about her being a princess when I saw her character wearing a silver tiara. Lily was not FlowerChild183. No way. Lots of chicks played as Elves and put on the crown decoration. Lots of them.
“You okay?” she asked.
I nodded. “Right, fine. Let’s go get your baby, huh?”
She smiled. “Thanks for tonight. I needed the night out. Sometimes it’s nice to let go, you know?”
I definitely knew. I wished we had more time. I would have spent more of it between her legs, pleasuring her until she tapped out from too many orgasms. But we both had responsibilities. All we could have was these few stolen hours tonight.
We left the hotel slower than when we came, and I drove us back over to Old City. “Wait, do you need me to drive you home?” I asked.
She shook her head. “Nope, my sister has a car seat for Rosie. She’ll take me.”
I pulled into the parking garage, and we walked together toward the elevator. An awkward silence wafted between us, and I didn’t like that.
We walked down the hall to my condo together, and I opened the door. Mari smiled at us but then squinted at her sister. “Hmm. Good for you. You needed to get laid.”
“Marigold!” Lily hissed at her sister.
Mari shrugged. “What? It’s true. You both needed to get it in. You’re wound so tight.”
Lily put a hand over her face. “I’m sorry. You can fire her if you want.”
“Hey!” Mari cried.
I chuckled. “Nope. Mari’s perfect. Finding a nanny’s hell. I’ll take the razzing. How were the kids?”
Before she could answer, I heard a cry from the bedroom. Without thinking, I rushed inside. Liam was sound asleep, but Rosie was standing up in the crib crying. I didn’t think about it when I picked her up and tried to soothe her. I couldn’t help it. The dad in me wanted to take all her tears away.
“It’s okay, little miss. I got you,” I said to her, bouncing her in my arms. She was still crying but seemed to calm down the tiniest bit at my soothing voice. I turned to find Lily had entered the room, but she had a hand on her heart as she watched me. “You want your mama?” I asked Rosie.
But Rosie shook her head and laid it on my chest. “No. Da-da.”
