This was great.

I loved her too.

Right?

I guess all those thoughts took a little longer to process in my head than Chloe believed they should have, because now instead of smiling up at me, she was frowning as more tears pooled in her eyes.

“Hey, I’m sorry, yes, of course,” I said, taking her back into my arms. “I love you too. Gosh, I’m such a fool. I love you. I have for a while. I should have said it first.”

“You…” She sniffled. “You’re not just saying that because…”

“No.” I pulled back and looked down at her again. “I’m not just saying that. I love you.” I kissed her.

Since my grandfather’s death, the only place we’d allowed ourselves to show each other affection had been up in the apartment. The house still felt too much like my grandfathers to relax in.

Now, however, neither of us were thinking.

We’d just admitted that we loved each other.

Chloe took the kiss deeper, pressing her body up against mine until my needs for her were uncontrollable. I pinned her against the wall, pulling, yanking, tearing off clothing until we were skin against skin.

I slid into her with an urgency that I’d never felt before. I swore under my breath when I bumped my elbow against the doorway.

I had to have more of her. Needed everything she would give me.

“More,” I growled against her ear as her nails left red streaks down my arms. “More.”

“Lane,” she cried out as I hoisted her up. She wrapped her legs around my hips as I walked her to the bathroom sink and set her down so that I could plunge harder, deeper into her heat.

There were no words. None needed. Her soft moans mixed with my grunts as I continued to take, to give her everything.

Once I felt her convulse around me and tighten, I knew that I would never be the same. I wasn’t just in love with Chloe, I was completely and wholly in love with Chloe. It was something I had never felt before.

“I love you,” I said again when my own release consumed me.

Chloe’s fingers were buried in my hair, her legs still wrapped tightly around my hips.

“What now?” she asked with a sigh.

“Now?” I thought for a moment. “I don’t know, but whatever it is, we’ll figure it out together. Agreed?”

“Agreed,” she said with a sigh, and I felt her relax. “How about I start dinner?”

Then I remembered the phone call I’d come in here to talk to her about.

“Sure, but we’ve got a phone call to make first. Malory wanted to update us,” I said as we pulled on our clothes.

“Is it bad?” she asked.

I shrugged. “She just sent me a text telling me to call her.” Seeing the worry on her face, I stopped what I was doing and pulled her into my arms. “Whatever it is, we’re in this together. Remember?”

She took a deep breath and nodded. “Okay, let’s call her in the other room though.”

I smiled and then pulled back to finish getting dressed.

We sat at the kitchen table and waited until Malory answered the phone on the fourth ring. She sounded a little breathless and angry.

“Yeah?” she barked out.
