“The college-educated DJ.”

“That one,” he chuckled, shaking his head a little. “He has some string of gigs out here for a week, and they want me to let him stay with me–”

“They called you at two in the morning for that?”

“I’m from Minnesota–it was only midnight there, and my family's night owls,” he huffed, waving that part off. “I said yes, but I didn’t know that meant he’s going to show up at five this morning and bug me all morning–he even broke my phone! He saw a message pop up, and I freaked out because I’m seeing someone and I haven’t told my family yet, so I tried to grab it and down to the ground it went–shattered.”

“That’s annoying,” I laughed, making him reluctantly laugh with me. “I just started seeing someone, too, and I think I’d lose my mind if I couldn’t text them and at least tell them what happened–”

“Oh, and I know they’re freaking out–I mean, I have been so wishy-washy with them that this has to seem like me just backing off,” Sam huffed, shaking his head in annoyance. “I have one of our team assistants getting me a new phone now, but it’s pretty annoying right now.”

As dumb as it may have seemed, I did feel oddly closer to the guy.

We’d been getting by with surface-level stuff, but sharing stuff about his family and our mutual confessions of seeing others felt like real substance shit.

That felt like something for us.

Even if that technically made Sam the first person I told that I was seeing someone.

What a concept–I was in the first phase of a relationship.

Metal and I didn’t put titles on it or anything, but we talked about it all the time. I told him all about how I never dated anyone before, and he really hadn’t either, so we were on a level playing field for that. He had a lot of questions about the guy I lost my virginity to, but only because he was the only person I’d ever told I was gay to…and because I still fucked him every time I was home for the offseason.

That was a weird conversation, but insightful. I learned that Metal was not a virgin, but that he’d never been able to get off while having sex and would actively look forward to when it was over so he could finish alone. I just couldn’t tell anyone else that I was into men, so I fucked Justin every summer since I was twenty, but had no interest in even talking to him outside of that.

And maybe that was because he was a jerk, or maybe it was the wife and two kids he had now, but he served a single purpose to me.

One that was now being fulfilled so much better by a man with no face.

And boy was he–Metal had a sex drive that left me half dead and completely drained every night. We’d sit on the phone and jerk off with one another, and he was just such a good listener–he did anything I asked with no hesitation.

His trade-off was an orgasm that almost always put him to sleep within a few minutes.

Maybe that was why I was so irritated this morning–I didn’t get my morning picture. Sometimes it was his lower half in a bathroom mirror, fresh out of the shower, and sometimes it was right to the point–his morning wood, swollen in his hand and calling out for me.

God, I just missed him.

“Okay, well, let's get out of the funk, Karts,” I tried, slapping his back to get him a little bit fired back up with me. “You can’t fix your brother thing, and I can’t talk to my person, so let's just do the other thing we both love. Hockey.”

Sam nodded, gesturing for me to go and get set back up for drills with him in tow.

We both needed a little push…and maybe I wouldn’t have said anything about my woes, but I didn’t miss the way he was avoiding using pronouns for the person he was seeing, too.

Maybe we had more in common than I might have thought.

Chapter 13

Sam

Landon and I may have been mastering drills a whole lot easier, but that assistant showing up with my phone couldn’t have come any sooner–I was off that ice in seconds. I was sure it upset Landon, but I only had one grumpy muscle man to worry about upsetting, and I was certain I had been upsetting him all day.

Sitting in the locker room, I skipped through all the boring phone setup stuff, going straight for the app store to download the only app that mattered these days. It was a brutal three minutes of waiting for it to finish, followed by logging in before I finally got to see my guy.

BaskarKnight: Good morning, babe! It’s so weird beating you to being awake… I have work all day today, and I won't be home till pretty late, but if you’re still up and interested, I can get dinner on the way home, and we can watch an episode of Clone Wars or something. I have early stuff tomorrow, so nothing too late, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t get to spend at least some time with you before I make you cum your brains out and go to bed.
