“I really don’t have much of a choice right now, do I?”
Both men shake their heads.
“Then let’s get to work. I have a patient who’s scared out of her mind and needs me.”
Before either can say anything, I turn and walk away.
I knew Pembrooke was shady. I just didn’t think he was this level of shady.
CHAPTER FIVE
Hades
“So she’s just gone? Nowhere to be found?” Evelyn asks for the third time.
“Marie said that Pembrooke threatened her job if she kept shadowing him. Told her that he would make sure she never worked again. She didn’t want to leave, but he has a lot of power.” I remind her.
She rubs her hands over her face. I hate seeing her like this.
“We can’t find any trace of her. Did you get her name at least?” Trigger asks.
“She said her name was Melanie, but I never looked to see if that was actually her name or not. It would be on the chart, but it’s not here. Pembrooke swears he took her to CT and left.”
“Come on, Princess, think. Are you sure she said her name was Melanie?”
She glares at me. “Of course I’m sure. I see over a hundred patients a day, but a name like that stuck out.”
“This isn’t helping,” Natalie cuts in. “We are on the same team. You two need to chill out.”
“He’s going to kill her,” Evelyn says, her guilt clear on her face. “I should have never left her side.”
“Would the other patient have lived if you stayed by her side?” I ask.
She frowns. “I don’t know. She’s up in surgery now.”
“Okay, so it’s not your fault. Stop being the martyr. This isn’t on you. What do we do now?” I turn to Reaper.
“We keep looking for her and hope she’s alive.” He pulls Natalie under his arm.
Natalie looks troubled when she says, “She’ll be alive. If she was in as bad of shape as Evelyn says, she’s his new plaything. She got away somehow and came to the hospital for help. She hasn’t been with him long enough to know that’s a bad idea. Pembrooke is probably one of his benefactors. Or he has dirt on him. Either way, I bet he delivered her out the back door to one of his men. She’s wherever he keeps her. We won’t see her for a long time, but he won’t kill her. He doesn’t kill his toys. He only plays rougher.”
No one says a word when Natalie stops talking. Reaper pulls her into his side as Wrath reaches out to pat her shoulder.
I wasn’t here when Natalie came to the club, but I’ve heard bits and pieces of the story. She used to be the mayor’s girlfriend until she gathered the strength to leave. It led her to the gates of this compound and right into Reaper’s arms.
She’s safe now, but with William Dansworth out there, she will never truly be able to live in peace.
“We will save her,” I promise her.
She gives me a sad smile. “I wish I could trust that we can save her, but we can’t know for sure. Even if we do, she will never be the same.”
“Well, we will do our best,” Wrath tells her. “It’s why we want all of you girls to know how to fight. You fight like hell and never let them take you to a secondary location. Crash the damn car or don’t get in it. Die right there if you have to.”
“Um, or don’t die?” Evelyn gives Wrath a sideways look. “What the fuck?”
“I don’t want any of you to die either, but if the choice is to die there or get in the car, die there. At least then we would have a body and know for sure.”
I smack Wrath in the back of the head as I walk by to go sit closer to Evelyn.
