“And a pain in the fucking ass.”

He smirks. “The best kind. Go. I’ll handle this shit.”

With that, I leave him behind, hating that I do know that Evelyn is working a double today, meaning she won’t be off until seven tomorrow morning.

That’s not why I’m going, though. I’m going for Pinky.

At least, that’s what I’m telling myself.

Evelyn

I’m dead on my feet, but I still have hours left. I head into the on-call room to take a nap but stop short when I see Dr. Pembrooke lying on the bed.

I quietly try to back out, but he sits up.

“Come on in. There’s two beds.” He indicates the other free one.

I could take that bed, but I wouldn’t get any rest. Not when he’s in the room with me. I don’t trust him. Not even a little bit. I would never be able to relax enough to fall asleep in his presence. Especially alone.

“Oh, no. Dr. Hemlock is more tired than I am. I’ll let him have a nap first.”

“Evelyn, get in here and rest. You look exhausted.”

I press my lips together.

“You’re right. I’ll go grab my earplugs.”

I turn to leave, but he reaches out, grabbing my arm.

“Evelyn, why are you running away from me? Are you scared of me?”

That almost makes me snort. I’m not scared of any man. Reaper and Wrath make sure us women know how to take care of ourselves.

He does make me uncomfortable, though. It’s like that warning system in my gut screams anytime he is around.

He’s my boss. I can’t do anything to him until he crosses a line. One he is close to crossing right now with his hand on my arm.

“I’m not. Why would you think I was doing that?” I turn the tables on him.

He drops my arm and forces a smile. “No reason. Come rest.”

I’m halfway out the door, but I don’t know if I can leave without gaining more of his attention.

“Dr. Kingston, do you have a minute?”

I turn, finding Hades walking down the hall toward me with a coffee in his hand.

“Of course. I’ll be back, Dr. Pembrooke. A patient needs me.”

I step away from the door, grateful when it clicks closed behind me. Then I make my way down the hall to Hades.

“Are you okay?” Hades asks, looking confused.

“Yeah, it’s nothing. What can I do for you?”

He frowns at me like he doesn’t believe me, but thankfully he lets it go.

“I’m staying with Pinky tonight. Anything I need to know?” he asks.
