He moved off the bridge without another word and I went after him, my hand trailing the bone railing one last time — the old smooth bone under my fingers, the faint memory of everyone who’d stood here coming back against my palm — and then we were off the bridge and into the city and the Bone Bridge was behind us.

We were twenty meters from the outer wall entrance when the hum changed.

Not in the Crypt levels below us. Not in the Archive. In the ground.

I stopped.

What came up through the soles of my boots had a texture to it that hadn’t been there on the way to the bridge — not the directed interference I’d been tracking through the Dominion’s walls for the past day, not the structured hum of the lineage system. This was a presence older and less organized and far, far larger, pressing up from a depth that put it well below the Crypt tiers, below the foundations of the city itself.

Below the city.

In the grave fields.

I turned.

The outer grave fields lay in the last of the light. But the hum coming through the ground was different.

It was moving. Slow and below the detection threshold of anything that wasn’t specifically reading for it — but moving. A pulse in the accumulated bone mass of the inner grave field ring, as directional as a current in deep water, drawing from the densest burial areas outward toward the—

The bridge.

Not the bridge. Below the bridge.

I grabbed Thruk’s arm.

He turned at the contact — fast, his hand already moving toward his weapon — and then read my face and stopped.

“Something is activating in the grave fields.”

He turned to look where I was looking.

The grave fields were dark. The light was almost gone. The outer wall ghostfire threw pale illumination across the nearest burial ground.

In the dark beyond it, in the deep inner ring where the oldest burials were, in the ground below the point where the Bone Bridge arched over the gap to the observation platforms—

The ground shifted.

Not wind. Not groundwater. Something below it, slow and purposeful.

“He’s already started.” She turned.

“He didn’t wait. He has the relic and he’s already—“

“How far along.”

“I don’t know. The grave fields are enormous. What he can draw on from here—“ I looked at the extent of the inner ring, the dark earth stretching in both directions around the city wall’s outer base. “If he’s activating the grave field mass, the outer ring constructs he can build won’t look like the one in the Crypt chamber. The Crypt constructs were built from archived bone. Precise. This is mass burial. Unarchived, uncatalogued, no selection. What comes out of this ground will be—“

Below the bridge, in the dark, the soil moved again.

Thruk’s hand closed around my wrist — not pulling me, grounding himself, which was a distinction I noticed with more clarity than the situation required. “Counter-resonance barrier. Can you build it in the Crypt levels before he activates the full array?”

“If we go now.”

“Then we go now.”

He released my wrist and moved, and I moved with him, and behind us the grave fields were quiet in the way that wasn’t silence — the way that was a held breath before the next.
