For fifteen years, I blamed myself because I couldn’t stop Grant’s bleeding.

Tonight, his killer told the truth.

Grant didn’t die because I failed him.

He died because Colonel Arthur Harlan and Robert Vance wanted to bury twenty-three murdered men.

Mara touches my face.

“Are you all right?”

“No.”

Her expression softens.

“But I think I will be.”

“That’s a start.”

I look at the bruise around her throat.

“He did that?”

“Yes. It’s nothing.”

My hands tighten around her arms.

“He put his hands on you?”

“He regretted it.”

From behind her, Trigger says, “She took him down.”

Wolf nods. “Put him on his face.”

“Havoc helped,” Mara says.

Havoc walks toward us.

“Not much.”

I look at Mara.

“You arrested Arthur Harlan?”

“Sheriff Tate put the handcuffs on him.”

“After she dropped him,” Havoc says.

Mara gives him a look.

“What?”

“I’m making sure Doc gets the entire story.”

I smile.

Grant’s little sister never needed me to save her.
