"It's time," he says.
Lena stands. She looks at Severin with the measuring stare she's been applying to him all day, and whatever she finds passes her inspection, because she nods once.
"Take care of her," she says.
"I intend to."
"That wasn't a request."
His mouth twitches. "No. I gathered that."
I look at the cottage one last time. The desk by the window. The laptop with the beginning of Severin's story saved on its screen. The Marburg packet waiting beside my keys. Lena standing on the porch with her arms crossed and her chin up and every intention of being here when the next threshold opens.
We walk out together. The porch light is off. I reach for the switch out of habit.
Severin catches my wrist.
"Leave it off," he says. "Wherever I have you, I know where I belong. The Veil is closing. Come."
We step off the porch. Lena watches from the doorway. I raise one hand. She raises hers.
Then Severin and I cross the gravel lane and walk into the tree line. The November darkness takes us gently. The thread pulls taut. The world we borrowed for a day gives way to the one we chose.
His hand is warm around mine. His heartbeat pulses through his fingers. Beyond the trees, the Veil opens to receive us, and whatever waits on the other side is ours.
TOM
I drive to the cottage at dawn on November second.
The porch light is off. The front door is unlocked. Inside, a woman I've never met is sitting at the kitchen table with a cold cup of coffee and a look on her face that tells me she hasn't slept.
"Lena Marchetti," she says. "You must be Tom."
"I am."
She slides an envelope across the table. My name is on it in Ashley's handwriting.
I read the letter standing in the kitchen while Lena watches me. I read it twice. Then I sit down across from her and stay there for a long time.
The Marburg packet is on the desk, sealed and addressed. Ashley's laptop is open, the cursor blinking on a page of prose I'll read later and recognize as the truest account of Sleepy Hollow anyone has ever written. The evidence folders are stacked beside her mother's research, organized with the meticulous care of a woman who understood that truth requires documentation.
"She asked me to protect the records," I say.
"She asked me to mail the packet." Lena's voice is steady. "And to keep the cottage."
"Then we do both."
I'll send the correction to Marburg. I'll help Lena with the deed. I'll preserve the truth Ashley and Severin uncovered, because that is what Hadleys do, and for the first time in my life, I am choosing it rather than inheriting the obligation.
That evening, I open the Hadley family records and turn to a blank page. I sit for a moment with the pen in my hand. Then I write a new entry. Not a warning. A record.
The curse is broken. The Horseman and Ashley have crossed into the Veil together.

Blythe was my first love, my almost-fiancée. Then she chose New York, and I stayed in Sleepy Hollow.
