“They’re my family too,” I stammer, pointing to Eli and John in the window ahead of us.
“No, baby.” Cade squeezes my fingers. “We always get a choice.”
“I agree.” Elena nods. “I mean, I love my sister. But I love my found family a lot more than my biological one.”
I never thought about it that way. Cade is the first person I’ve ever loved who I wasn’t related to. But maybe Elena is the second? She accepted me so completely, I think she cares for me even more than Ava ever did…
“Can you be my adopted sister?” I ask shyly.
Cade’s eyes flick to me and he smiles.
“Heck yea. I love that.” Elena grins.
Then her lips droop when the brake lights flash in front of us. “Looks like we’re here.”
I can see the boom of a big excavator sticking up over Wade’s vehicle.
Oh shit.
Cade swings the truck around to face away from the others. “This way you don’t accidentally see anything you don’t want.”
He leans to me, taking both of my hands to look into my eyes. “It ends today,” he growls, then gets out.
Elena props her elbows on the console. “So let me tell you about everyone else…”
Chapter 62 - Cade
Dust kicks around my boots when they land in the dry grass. Then a billow of black smoke fills the air when Oliver starts up the excavator.
Ah, so that’s the plan.
Wade grins, standing poised at the backdoor of his truck. “Ready for this shit?”
Ford ties his horse to Mason’s bumper and strides towards me. “Cade, is it true?” His gray eyes are stormy pinholes under his hat.
Fuck, I could never read this guy.
“What part?” I ask cautiously.
“All of it,” he grunts. “The accident? The bullshit?”
“I had no part in any of it.” I keep my hands out…just in case.
He watches me with impassive features. “Sometimes we get mired in shit, even if it isn’t our fault, huh?”
Is that a positive or a negative?
“Mason called me. Said these are the two who caused it all.” He watches Wade open the backdoor and yank Eli out onto the ground.
“Eli cut my brake lines and set the bomb. John is the one who hired Dave.” I make sure to add the last part.
I know that name will resonate with Ford.
When his fists bunch next to his thighs, I know he’s made the connection.
His jaw tics when Wade reaches in and tugs John out next.
Then he steps forward, grabbing the fallen man by the handcuffs to drag him across the ground.
