She was mine only because she had allowed it, and I was hers because I chose to be.

Her gaze searched mine, not fearful or hesitant, but waiting for the truth of me.

“You are certain?” I asked.

Her expression softened by a fraction. “Are you?”

“Yes.”

The answer required no calculation.

I wanted her. Not because the bond had identified her as necessary. I wanted Brynn.

Her courage. Her restraint. Her stubborn refusal to abandon what mattered to her. The way she had looked at me when I was wounded and dangerous and still seen a person worth saving.

I reached for her then, slowly enough that she could refuse, deliberately enough that she would know I meant every part of it.

She did not step back.

Her hand met mine halfway.

The contact was simple, but it still changed the room.

“This time is different,” I said.

“I know.”

“No necessity.”

“No,” she said softly. “Choice— because we want to.”

The word settled through me with more force than command ever had.

“Yes,” I said. “Because we want to.”

I adjusted my hold on her slightly, ensuring the contact remained steady as I continued.

Her attention did not waver.

“I want to remain with you,” I continued, aware that the phrasing did not align with my previous communication patterns, but also aware that accuracy now required it.

I held her gaze as I completed the clarification.

“I care for you,” I said, the term selected because it most closely aligned with the condition. “That remains true independent of the bond’s initial influence.”

I lowered my head toward hers. Language had reached its limit; I wanted her to feel the answer in the care I took with her. When our mouths met, I did not rush or claim. I kissed her because I had chosen to remain and wanted her to know the choice was mine.

She responded immediately, not with uncertainty, but with acceptance, her hand tightening slightly as the bond between us deepened in a way that no longer resembled its initial formation.

When I drew back, the distance between us remained minimal.

Her gaze held mine, and whatever response she formed did not require verbal confirmation for me to recognize its alignment with my own.

There were no remaining variables requiring evaluation.

Only continuation.

Brynn
