“Probably because I serve no one but myself.”

Not anymore. Now that I’ve awoken, you will obey.

“Or what?” I still spoke aloud as I slowly spun in a circle trying to decide what direction to head in.

Or suffer my wrath. Irritation hued the disembodied voice.

“Threatening isn’t likely to get me or anyone to help you.” I began walking away from the talking ice, wondering at my vivid hallucination. Since I didn’t feel sluggish and cold, could it be some invisible, non-smelly gas released by the quake causing it?

Go to sleep for thousands of years, and this is what I awaken too, it grumbled.

“If you don’t like it, why not nap for a few thousand more?”

Because I’m not tired anymore.

Despite the inanity, I couldn’t help but ask. “What are you?”

I’ve been called a god.

“By who?”

Your ancestors.

“And what did they call you?”

Nothing. The last time I roamed this planet, the organisms, even the two legged ones, lacked the ability to properly communicate and simply used to point and scream while shaking their pointy sticks.

I blinked. “Are you referring to cavemen?”

Is that what you call them? Apt, I suppose, given their choice of habitat. My understanding is, you’ve evolved since to live in structures you build.

“You speak as if you don’t know for sure?”

Did you not listen when I said I’d been sleeping?

“You don’t have to be snarky,” I muttered even as I wanted to slap myself for arguing with… no one.

Once more, my random steps brought me around in a circle, and I huffed in annoyance. “Blasted snow.”

On that, we are agreed. Between it and the lava that encased my form as I slept, I’m finding myself in a quandary.

“Is that why you keep invading dreams, demanding people free you?”

It is embarrassing that one such as myself must ask for aid, and yet, what other choice do I have?

“And if freed, what then?”

I’ll feed, for I am hungry.

“Dare I ask what you’ll feed on?”

Everything…

Before I could reply, a shout turned my head.

“Velma! Are you out here?”

“Noah?” My hollered reply held relief.
