Carter loosened his tie and looked about the room as if he expected someone to jump out at him.

“Carter.”

“Mother ordered the hit on you.”

Gideon knew that but having it confirmed was still a difficult pill to swallow, although not surprising. “How do you know?”

“She told me. We argued about it. She thinks you’re working with the government to frame us.”

“Frame you for what?”

“Oh, come on, Gideon, you know or at least suspect the pies we have our fingers in and none of it’s legal.”

“Perhaps, but that’s a big jump from me being a spy for the government.”

“That’s what I told her.”

“What were you arguing over?”

“We’re involved with something called Project Cradle. I was poised to be the next leader of the group but someone mother knows doesn’t want to let go of the reins. I told her if I can’t run it, I want out.”

“Bet she took that well.”

Carter smirked “She didn’t.”

“So who’s running things?”

Carter lost his smile and once again began searching the room, the tension licking off his skin. “I can’t tell you. But I will say this, it has to do with the Macey deal.”

“How so?”

“I have a sister.”

Gideon pretended to be shocked. “What?”

“She’s a few years older than me and Tarquin Green is her father.”

“I don’t get it.”

“Let’s just say there’s a lot you don’t know about my mother.”

“Clearly.” Gideon had to try to not look bothered by the information. “How does this involve me, though? What do you need from me?”

“I want your help. I’m going to flip on the project members, and I want your help to do it.”

“Flip?”

“I have evidence and unless I get what I’m asking for, I’m going to the police and I’m going to ask for immunity and protection.”

“You’re going to send your own mother to jail?”

“I have no choice. This is them or me now.”

Gideon ran a hand through his hair and turned to school his expression.

“Keep him talking, Gideon.”

He almost startled hearing Watchdog in his ear. “What evidence do you have?”
