“Perhaps.”
“We need to bring the entire team in on this and you need to tell us whatever it is you’ve been holding back.”
Bás grasped the back of his neck and sighed. “I know but let’s get somewhere safe first.”
“Where are you thinking?”
“The place in Farnham. We can get there quickly, and Watchdog can make sure we aren’t followed using the cameras on the motorways.”
“Agreed.”
She lifted her head to watch Gideon walking down the hall, a bag over his shoulder and Titan shadowing him. Before she could speak, Bás’ phone rang, and he answered, putting it on speaker. “Talk to me, Reaper.”
“Found the nest but no sign of the shooter.”
“Anything useful?”
“Nothing I can see. He must have done his homework though because this is a disused office and has a direct line of sight to Gideon’s living room.”
“Get what you need and meet us at safe house five.”
“Roger that.”
Duchess knew Bás was being cautious by not revealing the location in front of Gideon and the truth was, they’d probably have to blindfold him for the journey to keep the location safe for him and them.
Reaper hung up and Gideon stepped forward, worry etched on his face as he moved into her space, his masculine scent making it difficult to concentrate.
“Is Damon safe?”
“I’ll have Reaper and Lotus pick him up on their way to the safe house.”
Gideon blew out a breath of air, ruffling the fine hair on her neck as he did, and she fought her reaction to him.
“Thank you. What about the call to my dad?”
“We can handle that when we get to our destination.”
“Let’s get out of here.”
They headed down in the lift but instead of taking the front exit, they left through the side, with Hurricane, who’d been unusually quiet, flanking Gideon on the other side to Titan. She and Bás covered the front and rear.
“We’re clear.”
They climbed into the blacked-out Land Rover that was a few years old and a little beat up so as not to draw the attention of a new model. She slid in beside Gideon in the back. Bás jumped into the driver’s seat with Titan beside him and Hurricane took the seat on the other side of Gideon, basically caging him between them.
As Bás gunned the engine, she caught the look he gave Hurricane and clenched her jaw. Hurricane turned to Gideon who was tapping his fingers on his knee in agitation, and she laid her hand over his to reassure him.
“Sorry, buddy.”
Gideon turned to Hurricane as he spoke, and she watched her friend stick the man she was coming to care for with a needle. Before his shock and betrayal could be voiced, he was out cold. His body slumped against her.
“That was a dick move.”
“You know the score, Duchess. We can’t take any chances and there are still questions to be answered that he can’t help us with.”
“He isn’t involved in this.”
Hurricane looked away, leaving Bás to take up this one. His eyes bored into hers, seeking answers to questions he wasn’t voicing aloud.
