“I see.” He clenched his jaw so hard he almost broke a tooth. What he wanted to say was fuck, but he remained outwardly calm.

“I know, but he has no prior convictions and surrendered his passport, so he isn’t a flight risk and no immediate threat to life, especially as he’s been banned from working until after his court date.”

“That’s okay, I understand. Do we have a date for that yet?”

“No.”

He could hear Aubrey walking around, the background noise changing as she did. “We have to let the Crown Prosecution do their thing now and build a case. As soon as we have a date, I’ll let you know.”

“Thanks, Aubrey.”

“So, you and Dr Sankey a thing now?”

He could hear the teasing note in her voice and knew better than to engage with a detective of her calibre. “Goodbye, Aubrey.”

He hung up to her laughing and walked to his door. He needed to know where that fucker, Andy Farr was, and for that he needed Lopez. Which meant having a conversation he’d been avoiding since he’d insisted on fitting Savannah’s alarm. That was the problem being surrounded by so many highly skilled operatives, nobody could get anything past them. It was worse now they were all married or shacked up because they had wives and they were even worse. Not even the FBI or CIA could compete when these women got even a sniff of a romantic connection.

He’d need to be clear on what this was if they asked and give them no room for scope or tittle-tattle. This was private and just sex and friendship, nothing more. Yet even as he said it, he was checking the locator on his phone that he’d slipped into her keys to make sure he knew where she was. Part of him felt like a creeper for doing it and not telling her. The other part that had seen far too many people die or end up in horrible situations, justified it as a precaution. She still had a stalker out there after all and this was simply a safety measure. That was the only reason, the only one.

He walked into the tech room and found Lopez at his desk working. He looked up and smiled and it was easy to see the change in the man. He looked like the baggage he’d carried alone for the last few years had lifted, leaving him free to be happy.

“Afternoon, Decker, what can I do for you?”

“I need a location on someone.”

Lopez stretched his fingers and grinned. “Name?”

“Andrew Farr.”

Lopez went still and then looked over at him, his hands still on the keyboard. “Savannah’s ex-husband?”

Unreasonable and unwanted jealousy crawled up his throat at the thought of Lopez knowing so much about the woman he was about to start an affair with. He gritted his jaw and tried not to show any outward sign of the green-eyed monster riding him. “Yes.”

Lopez leaned back and folded his arms over his chest. “Why?”

Decker could feel the protectiveness come over Lopez and felt irrationally territorial. Savannah wasn’t Lopez’s to protect, but then he had to remind himself she wasn’t his either. Except, while they were sleeping together, she was. He didn’t share and he took care of innocents, especially friends and Lopez had Addie.

“Because she and I are friends and after what happened with her ex last night, I want to make sure he doesn’t go near her.”

“Friends, you say?”

Decker swept an annoyed hand through his hair and glared at his teammate. “For fuck’s sake. Yes, friend.”

“Umm and is this the kind of friend that we share spit with?”

Fucking Waggs had blabbed. Goddammit, he should’ve known he couldn’t hide fuck all from this lot. “Don’t be juvenile, Lopez, just say what it is you want to know.” He crossed his arms over his chest and waited, fighting the urge to throttle Lopez.

“Are you sleeping with Savannah?”

“Not yet.”

“But you intend to?”

“We have an arrangement, yes.”

“Does she know the score with you?”

Decker was interested to hear what the others thought the score was. “And that would be?”
