I was up next, right in front of Seraphina, to walk down the aisle.

Nico wandered over, one hand shoved into his pocket, like walking me down the aisle was the equivalent of the death penalty.

I couldn’t blame him. I’d betrayed the Sons. I was surprised any of them were willing to breathe the same air as me, let alone offer me their arm.

Brooks isn’t here.

Nico had barely reached me when another voice cut through the air.

“No.”

I knew that voice.

Nico stopped.

Brooks stepped between us.

He didn’t spare me a glance. Only kept staring at Nico. “Move.”

Fifty-Seven

Brooks

Seeing Daphne again hurt like a motherfucker.

I’d spent the past twenty-four hours debating whether to come.

Debating whether I could bring myself to see her again.

This is the last time.

I heard whispers behind us but didn’t glance at them. No one else mattered. I had limited time with Daphne, and I wasn’t going to waste a single second looking away from her.

Neither of us said a word as I guided her arm through mine.

Her scent drifted through the salty breeze as we walked barefoot through the sand toward the aisle.

I stole a peek at her. Her hair blew against her face, and she tucked it behind her ear. I noticed she’d trimmed her bangs.

I wanted to stop right there in the sand and pull her into me.

The altar kept getting closer, and I debated walking us straight into the ocean. We could let the tide take us away, and I wouldn’t have to live with the heartbreak another day longer.

The end of this aisle wasn’t the start of a wedding.

It was the end of me ever touching her again.

When we reached the happy couple, I didn’t immediately let go. Cedric and Adelina were closing the distance behind us, waiting for us to separate.

I wanted to hold Daphne for one more second.

Wanted to feel her against me, even if it was only our elbows linked.

I gave myself one, two, three seconds before releasing her.

She gasped, and our fingertips dragged together for one second before slipping apart.

Fuck, letting go hurts.
